How hard is it to take off a soft top?

I have a hard top but I'm really wanting to take it off for the summer, But we have been having a lot of rain lately. How much time does it take to take off a soft top?

I can take my soft top completely off including door frames and roll bar attaching brackets in under a half hour by myself without hurrying.

It roughly takes me 10 min. All i take off are the side windows, leaving the back on. Than just unclip and fold down. I been doing this for awhile now and the back window doesn't get damaged.

^^^X2^^^
I have never driven my Jeep with the top folded down, to me topless means that the doors are off & the top is completely removed & sitting in the spare room in my house.:D

JEEPIN-AROUND-18, Which method are you referring to, folded down or completely removed?

Capt Jarrod 04-05-2012 11:44 PM

I take mine completely off other than the frame that folds down, but I do it in under 5 minutes to get off and 10 putting it back on.

I don't know anything about either of the methods. What is the difference?

Same here.... 10 minutes, but I store all the windows. Bestop is cool. :)

Kind of hard to figure out the "methods" you are referring to. Can you be specific so that we can give you better help?

If you mean that "take off" equals complete removal and detachment of the side and rear soft windows, soft top, roll bar attaching brackets and upper door frames then as we said above, it is a relatively quick job, definitely thirty minutes or less depending on how many times you have done it and how adept you have become.

If, however, you mean that "take off" means to simply put the soft top down while leaving it attached to the Wrangler, then its a five to ten minute operation depending on how carefully you choose to take care of the soft windows.

Did this help?

Yes it helped a lot! I basically meant like it rained over night but the next day it was sunny. And I had to go to school that morning just something that's quick and if it rains again I can put up quick.

It does take a bit longer to put it (factory soft top) back up than to put it down, but only a few minutes. I put mine up very carefully and make sure the zippers are aligned properly and the leading edge of the side windows is tucked into the channel the right way. It takes me about fifteen minutes.

If you are going to buy a soft top, there are a lot of different options for you to consider. If it were me, I would start a new thread and ask which soft top is the easiest and most hassle free to buy in the aftermarket and install EASILY. Some aftermarket tops are high quality like the OEM soft top but are a mega hassle to install the first time. You may even want to consider a frameless soft top.

I have a YJ with OEM hardware and a Bestop Replace-A-Top. It takes me a little over 10 minuets to fold the top down by my self. With help it takes about 7ish if they know what they are doing.

cavsvet74 04-06-2012 04:21 PM

The time consuming part of raising and lowering a soft top, is taking care of the windows. Rolling them up in a storage bag takes a lot longer than throwing them on the back seat.

KBR97 04-06-2012 07:16 PM

I can get my down within 5 minutes. Putting it back on takes a little longer. 10-15 minutes.
