Steering lock

Now that the kids are out on their own, we bought a Jeep to tow behind our (also new) motorhome. By all reports, it's the perfect vehicle and so far we LOVE it!

Today's the day. We are headed out on our first trip. The coach is loaded and I've got the tow set up installed. We're ready!

So my question: I reread the manual section on flat towing my Wrangler and it tells me to leave the key in the ACC position and disconnect the battery. I know in the past there were steering wheel locks that would make this step necessary, but my 2012 doesn't seem to have a steering lock. Another website I visited (but cannot find again) indicated that the ACC/disconnect step is no longer necessary. I need the truth.

Is it really a necessity to leave the key in ACC and disconnect the battery in order to flat tow my Wrangler?

Towing Toad

I tow my 2012 JKU and it indeed does not have a steering lock. I believe all JKs since 2010 or 2009 do not have steering locks. Mine is in automatic and all I do is put the Transfer case in Neutral (read the manual) and put the Transmission in park (yes, read the manual) and hitch up. I've towed mine several thousand miles and it tows great. It does not require a key. I do not disconnect my battery and I've had no problems.

I appreciate that input, HogDriver. I suspected that might be the case. Thanks.

No steering wheel locks on the Wranglers 2009 model year and newer. No need to have the key in the ignition nor pull any fuses. This is one reason why we wanted a 2009+ year JKU.

Once I pull up to the coach and hook up the keys go right into my pocket and stay there until we are unhooking.

Good choice on toads. The Jeep is the perfect vehicle to tow and enjoy the off pavement scenery when you get to your campground. Enjoy it.

I tell my wife after the coach is parked and her satellite TV is up and running that we are ready to go exploring.

Life begins where the pavement ends.

Mike.
