inline 4.0 Vs. 4.2

I have been told that the motor to have when looking for a used Jeep is the inline 6 4.0. However I have seen several that are the 4.2....is this motor also an inline 6? I know the 4.0 replaced the 4.2, but how do they compare? Is the 4.2 also a good motor?

4.0= fuel injected
4.2= carb

I have a 4.2 and think its great. Lots of low end power which is great for keeping it slow and steady. The Carb is tricky and can be a negative, but I plan to switch to a motorcraft 2100 and have heard great things about it. I will say the 4.0 is likely the better one to get, but there's nothing wrong with the 4.2 either. I certainly would not pass up a good jeep just because it had a 4.2.

I have a 4.0 and it runs like a clock. Great low end torque, really hard to stall out in. I've heard they last forever. Inline six is the perfect Jeep engine in my opinion whether 4.2 or 4.0.

The 4.2 has better low end torque and HP. The 4.0's peak is around 3k RPMs. A 4.2 with a 4.0 head and 4.0 FI swapped on is a wicked combo! Best of both worlds!

The best of both is a 4.2 crank in a 4.0 FI

4.0=190hp
4.2=112hp

Not true fella........The 4.0 is king as far as the Wranglers go. The 4.2 isn't bad, but much less HP. MIne always have had an1,800-2,00 rpm sweetspot for torque, and the 4.2 I had was about the same rpm's for climbing. They are close torque though and that is what really counts. The stickies at the top of the YJ forum has all the info you need on the topic

Case in point
