selling jeep to buy another jeep....tj vs yj?

Hey guys. Currently I drive a jeep Cherokee sport 2wd()
I have come to love this jeep, but the lack of 2wd, is depressing. So im just going to sell it and try to put that money towards a wrangler.
Preferably a tj, or yj.
But here's the problem, I dont know too much about wranglers BC I've spend 2 years specifically with Cherokees.
All I pretty much is the tj has coil springs. And the yj has leaf springs.
but enlighten me guys what's better the yj or tj?
Note: id love to keep the 4.0L engine.

I really don't think there is a 'better' between the two, except the YJ will be cheaper because its older. I bought a '94 YJ in '94 and I just got an '06 TJ a few weeks ago. From the driver's seat I really can't tell the difference performance-wise. Except for the coils in place of the leafs and a different ignition system, its really just differences in cosmetics...square lights vs. round, different dash. Had I not found such a good deal on the TJ, there really wouldn't have been any reason why I wouldn't have opted for a solid YJ had I found one.

Well that clears that up :D thats bud. But the 4.0 did come in the yj's and tj's?

*Thanks
Also isnt it harder to find a bumper for the yj BC of shackle clearance. Or was I told wrong? Sorry im asking lots of noob questions.

I have a YJ, my fiance has a TJ. We both find faults with each others setups. Mine might get the rear axle linked but the front does great with leaf springs. His does great on the rocks but has had to track down the cause of deathwobble twice in the year that he has had it. We offroad very often and also use them as our primary vehicles.

I think 92 and up on the YJ came with 4.0 fuel injection setups. For bumpers check out quadratec--lots of bumpers for YJ's on there. My front is still the factory one. It will move if I need to get my tire closer to something and a sledgehammer fixes it at the end of the day. Alot cheaper lol

So I should look for a 92 + yj
And I had death wobble 3 diffent times in my jeep.it was a pain.

'91 and up has the Fuel Injection. I have a YJ, my dad has a TJ. I feel like the TJ has a smoother ride on road but other than that I don't see much of a difference. It's a Jeep, you can't go wrong!

True :)
also what axles normally came stock with the yj? Was it just a D30/ D35 or what?

TJDave 04-08-2012 04:45 PM

Well, you are upgrading to a Jeep with a frame. So, either one is an improvement!;)

All YJ's came stock with the D30/35

USMClovesXJ 04-08-2012 09:41 PM

my jeep did fine with out a frame...but draw backs by the plenty....
Haha and yeah.....thoes axles are coming out for something beefer.
I wana 8in lift ;) sooo deffently Gana need to beef up the axles

crafty 04-09-2012 10:43 AM

Just remember with that much lift a Wrangler will be alot more unstable than an XJ when offcamber on the trails.

USMClovesXJ 04-09-2012 12:43 PM

ahh....true...
But she's gana be my beach pounder and mud baby. We dont have anything but mud and bunny hills here in jacksonville but I do have plans to go to uwharie. So maybe a lift to run 38's?
