Plop's TJ build *Very Slow Build*

Well, for the longest time I have been kicking myself for getting rid of any of my Jeeps; and now with much anticipation, I finally got a TJ.

To start off:
1997 4.0L 5speed stick 134,xxx miles.
3" lift (pretty sure) with newish 33" BFG A/T's
Color is like a gray/ blue

First mods were to remove all the grates/ mesh on the lights and remove the tiny "spare" and carrier.

Plans
Long arm
AEV highline
better axles
bigger tires (some sort of M/T)
and put a CJ tailgate on it.
Going to be building bumpers in my last semesters, well mostly in my Fabrication class.

So close to being done with my Degree, I put school in high gear and have been going just about at Full time and even have spring/summer semesters so I can be done. Don't have much time because I have school pretty much full time now and finally got Full time at work, so my time is limited.

Glad to see ya back in the game Plop. Can't wait to follow this one.
I was sooo disappointed when you sold the first one. You worked so hard on it that it was hard to believe you'd let it go.
Keep us posted on your progress.

Plop 04-08-2012 08:08 PM

Thanks.
It was mainly foolishness getting rid of that Jeep, but If I hadn't I would have never got this one.

Forgot what it was like to drive a Jeep on the freeway, but 45 minutes showed me what it was like. Except this one is a whole lot crazier especially with blown out shocks and a broken sway bar link.

Nothing really major done to it. Only thing I have really done was swap out the stock fog lights for some Hella's that I had which are much better and took out nearly all the carpet.

I started to work on the CJ tailgate to swap onto this, but it has some cancer so I have to wait til next saturday when I start my spring semester so I can sand blast the gate and weld in some new metal. Plus I am going to be doing some mods to it so I can lock the gate and still use my inta-trunk.

I also made some new decisions on what I am going to do with this as far as mods go.

revised plans (fabrication work)
I am going to
-"raise" the fenders
-make some tube fenders
-make rear flares to match the front.
-do "boat sides"
(not sure if that term is known on this forum, but I heard of it on another forum)

Well, this semester I have fab class and I will be making a front bumper and if I can work fast enough a back bumper too.

The past semester I was working on my CJ tailgate, I had to replace metal that was underneath the hinges. Now I have to modify the tailgate so I can latch it closed with a soft top or hard top. It is going to kind of be like a truck tailgate but the latches will be moved by a key and I will be taking one of the locks from the stock tailgate. Once I do that I can paint it and install it.

Pics will start up shortly.

Spent $206 today in materials for bumpers that I will be making.

Got some 3/16" x 4" plate, 1" x 3" rect. stock and 1 1/2" x .120 DOM

Hope I can make the bumper as cool as I have it in my head. lmao

Plop 07-14-2012 09:17 PM

Making some progress on the bumper.

So far:
-bent the DOM tubing to somewhat resemble a pre-runner bar
-cut and drilled the top plate of the bumper
-cut the basic shape of the solid rect. stock for the tow points, just need to machine them

Tomorrow hopefully I will make the front plate and start on the bottom plate

Just need to get my camera charged up for some pics.

No fab update or pics, but they will show this weekend.

What I did and had to do, first was buying a hard top for what I would say is a deal. Then had to figure out why the jeep would not start in the typical manner. So I bought a battery... nope not the problem, but I have a purdy battery now :) then I figured out it was the starter. Now the Jeep sucessfully starts like all the normal ones.

Plop 07-29-2012 02:00 PM

Finally have some pics.
Bumper update: no longer using the DOM, don't like the way it looks with the bumper. The main part of the bumper is 'done' and just have to make a lower bumper bracket to tie into the frame because the stock lower postion will no longer work with the design. Then I have to cut two holes in the bumper to put the D-ring mounts on.

That bumper looks great. Those are some good fab skills man.

CJ-John 07-30-2012 05:59 AM

Looking good! Think you'll get an "A" on it?

GoldenSahara00 07-30-2012 06:13 AM

Bumper looks good. I like your revised plans much better :thumb:

Plop 07-30-2012 01:24 PM

Thanks, it has been a pain trying to do anything. Trying to find an alright welding job because I am pretty much done with my assoc. degree. Been working ridiculous hours that have been messing with my sleep schedule, going to school 4 days no room for fun. Normal work hours for me were 9-6pm then with little notice I am on 4am-1pm for about a month. But its definitely nice to get some progress.

GoldenSahara00 07-30-2012 02:24 PM

Yeah that shift has to suck. Being busy does too. Slow and steady man.

Boobicon 08-02-2012 01:22 PM

Awesome work ... Knock down any tree's yet

Plop 08-02-2012 07:41 PM

Thanks. But I haven't totally finished it yet. I have a few finishing touches, fully weld the back side of the bumper, make a lower mounting point, and the d-ring mounts.

Plop 08-04-2012 06:26 PM

All fab work is done. Just have to smooth some welds and paint it.

No pics of it yet because I had to hurry due to rain.

Plop 08-07-2012 06:54 PM

Pics were moved.

Plop 08-08-2012 05:29 PM

Thanks.

BlackTJ98 08-10-2012 01:25 PM

Awesome job, keep it up. Subscribed.

WranglerRiver 08-10-2012 03:32 PM

Hey anybody know what color this jeep is? I was thinking steel blue but wasn't sure. This might be my favorite color on a wrangler. Cool jeep btw!

Plop 08-10-2012 03:40 PM

Gunmetal pearlcoat, but there are two types, it changed slightly in 00 or 01?
Mine is the lighter variation.

Plop 08-12-2012 07:36 AM

I picked up a rust free CJ tailgate. I didn't want to use the one I had because it was rusty. And it is the next thing on the list to do.

This is what mine looks like finished I did the drop tailgate with the factory one... Just took off side hinges and got soon nice hinges from the home depot. Welded them on nicely and primered and painted to match jeep, got more pics but wife has the jeep today changing cv axles on her civic...

I like the look of the cj tailgate, nice idea is it going to lock??? The way I did mine it still uses the factory latch and locks to...

Plop 08-12-2012 08:56 AM

The old tailgate I have came with stainless hinges. They're a little bit dirty but should polish up nice. I was going to paint the gate satin black with the close to stock color for the JEEP letters. Hopefully it works out nice, I am terrible when it comes to painting.

Plop 08-12-2012 08:58 AM

I have an idea for the lock just have to have the gate on in order to fab it correctly, I am going to use the key locking mechanism to work the latches.

ken78744 08-12-2012 09:03 AM

That's a cool idea to work the latch, where did u buy ur metal for your front bumper?

Plop 08-12-2012 09:47 AM

I bought it from a place called Alro Steel, don't know if its just a Michigan place or if it has multiple locations. They cut me a deal because I bought 3 12' pieces.
