Cleghorn, Sunday Apr 15

I'll be running Cleghorn on the 15th. Meet 9am at McDonalds off of Wagon Train Rd (just south of Hwy 138, east of I-15). Chevron is next to it so you can gas up there. We'll head off around 9:30 for the trailhead, gonna run this from east to west. Post up if you can make it.

slazyks 04-09-2012 05:46 PM

I've heard of this trail from a few different sources. Is it difficult? I have a stock tj on 235/75r15s. If my Jeep is capable I will go.

DaK 04-09-2012 07:16 PM

You should be fine. The group he is wheeling with are awesome trail instructors. Highly recommend wheeling with them.

slazyks 04-09-2012 07:22 PM

This might sound stupid but what do people usually bring on these kind of trips? Lunch, water, wife, kids, beer?
I can pack and leave for Baja on a moments notice but obviously this isn't going to be a surf trip.

DaK 04-09-2012 08:48 PM

Food and beverage of choice except for beer on the trail. Wanna brew after the run while airing up, they are fine with that.

Kids and significant others are always welcome. I know my wife likes it when other women are on the trail.

BillG.OTD 04-09-2012 10:58 PM

Would like to join you, but the weekend is booked. We have run the trail several times and want to run it east to west. Im sure it will feel like a different trail...Maybe next time. Enjoy!

bigV 04-09-2012 11:56 PM

The forest service rates it a difficult trail, but they have to take all vehicles into account, stock Wranglers are a different breed. There are a few difficult spots, steep climbs/decents, off-camber areas, etc. I would say this is an easy/moderate trail. Bring plenty of water, a sack lunch, snacks, wife, kids, friends, camera, dogs, whatever, no drinking on the trail (your still drivin so you gotta follow the same rules).

Won't be making this run. Cleghorn for me, is a been there done that run. Exciting the first time through but bleh.. for another look see. Also, the better half and I are saving for another EPIC DaK adventure next month. Right now we are trying to line up a trail guide, once that is done and confirmed the run specifics will be posted up.

There should be a few TJ's on the run. Be a good idea to go and just chat with those guys see what they have done to their rigs, why they did it that way and what they would different if given the chance. For the "difficult" parts or the parts you may be uncomfortable with there are bypasses but it is good to watch others do the obstacles.

As they told me long ago, "you will be amazed at what a stock jeep can do." I still am to this day.

Again, highly recommend wheeling with these guys.

How many Jeeps you have going on this trip. I have run this trail many times but always west to east so this may be fun to do it the other way. I have to see what is on my to do list.

bigV 04-10-2012 12:36 PM

I'm not sure how many are going...7-10ish

We're planning on running it east to west which will make it seem like a new trail, plus you've never run it with me, I always try to make things more interesting :whistling:

Most true. Know I haven't been wheeling long but todate you are the only person I know or have ever heard of filling their tire with mud.

Thanks but we are saving for the Cerro Gordo trip. Now, that is a trip to bring the kids on and let them explore. :D

slazyks 04-10-2012 10:13 PM

Well it looks like I'm heading a few hundred miles south of the border on Friday morning. There is a really good swell slamming into Baja and I'm not about to miss it. This is the reason I bought the Jeep in the first place (I was tired of digging out my Toyota 2wd pickup). Hopefully I will be at the next trail ride.

Thank you all for answering my questions and concerns.

Btw...Is shooting allowed in the Cleghorn area?

If anyone on here surfs, you are welcome to join the trip.

No legal shooting that I am aware of in that area. There is the shooting range in Lytle Creek not far away. I like the range a lot as it is closely monitored, with cease fire times for everyone to go and set targets up check out what they have done etc without the worry of some bone head shooting near them.

Have You tried BEE Canyon? Its free and you get your own area to yourself. Just go early and please pick up trash or they will close it again.

Sorry about going off thread topic.

turdhurdler 04-11-2012 08:30 AM

Been through Bee Canyon several times going to Pine Cove. Nice drive and the water crossing is a great place to stop for lunch.

cool, you can probably guess who I am on JF :D

530ktm 04-14-2012 04:55 PM

Not sure if everyone is still going on this but after all the rain and snow up there it may be a mud bath so I am passing on this Sunday's event. Many nicer days coming along in the near future so hopefully some of you will go again at a later date.

I was out of town, how was the trip?

I'm also ready to head up for the next one.

bigV 04-15-2012 10:57 PM

Well, I ended up coating the underside of my hood with coolant while I was on the way there.....found a crack in the radiator outlet to the upper hose. I'll see if anyone that went posts a trip report and link it here.

Cal4Wheel does a lot to keep trail open for us to enjoy, it's a good organization to support.
