Need to choose a winch for Sahara
 
Being a supporting member of this forum, I have access to a few nice deals.
One of these deals is for winches, it can be found HERE

I was wondering how I should go about choosing the winch I will go with, 9k 10k or 12k. How do you choose it? Will I be able to mount it on the '12 Sahara stock bumper? Or should I start looking into bumpers?

I think the rule is 1.5 or 2 times the vehicle weight is a good idea. You can't go wrong with overkill though. I have a 10,500LB winch for my 2 door, mostly cause I wheel with vehicles that are bigger than my Jeep (3rd Gen 4runner, FJ Cruiser, XJ) and none of them have a winch.
I don't know what kind of aftermarket you got on your rig but all that adds weight. I would say 10K or 12K will be good for you and be sure you learn how to use it, cause winching is a science and can be dangerous if it isn't done right. There are a few informative videos on youtube. Also a good recovery bag is in order complete with the following: snatch strap, tow strap, tree strap, pair of D-Rings, snatch block, good work gloves, slip chain and/or a cable dampener if you go with wire rope.

As for brand of winch. Can't go wrong with the budget Smitty's, Engo or the Recon, like mine. People who say Warn or nothing, I scoff at them.

Your MINIMUM winch size should be able to pull 1.5x the weight of your vehicle. That's if you're gonna use it for very light duty. Pulling yourself (or someone else) out of deep mud, up an incline, etc, may require a larger size.

For JK's, the lowest size I'd recommend would be an 8000-lb winch. Personally, I'm gonna put a WARN 9.5cti-s on Jeep.

There are a bunch of things you need to consider before buying a winch. One is line speed, or how fast the winch can let out or take up cable. Winches with faster line speeds are generally more expensive. But you don't really NEED a fast line speed...it's just an option.

Another factor is the type of motor a winch has. Permanent magnet motors generally have a lower battery draw, overheat easier, and are best for lighter-duty winches. Series wound motors are more heavy duty, and usually more expensive.

Buying a winch with synthetic cable will save weight. It's also safer than cable, since it's not as dangerous as wire cable if it snaps and whiplashes back at you. Any winch you look at should come with a remote, so you can stand off to the side (much safer) while operating it. You should also use a damper on the line (coat, blanket, etc) to keep it from whipping back if it breaks, especially if you have wire cable.

Most winches stand up pretty well to the elements...you shouldn't need a waterproof version unless you regularly ford streams with the thing.

I'm also curious about this, with the warn mount for the stock bumper this isn't a concern that the winch seems high to me and blocks a lot of the grill for cooling?

If this winch and mount are installed on a stock JK is there anything else to be aware of? Stock battery/alternator is OK?

Ok, so after doing the homework kbwwolf suggested, I'm a little less confused, however I still don't know which winch I should choose.

Engo E9000 is a good idea. Less than $300 for a winch is a good deal! :)

I do have 2 concerns however:
1- Will I be able to mount it to my stock bumper? I'm guessing no, since there are no indentations or whatever for a winch.
2- What's aluminum hawse fairlead? According to what I've read, it's what prevents synthetic cable from getting damaged by the winch.
I think I'm gonna go with steel cable, but should I get a winch with aluminum hawse fairlead, just in case I decide to switch to synthetic cable later on?

need fairlead with rollers with steel cable. aluminum is designed for synthetic cable. also, find a way to put an air compressor on top of the winch. Warn sells one but it's $1800. we use the air compressor every time we go, haven't used the winch once.

I just made this decision myself, and it seems like it's silly to mount a winch to the stuck bumper since the mount itself is so expensive. The warn mount to mount a winch on the stock bumper is like 250-270$, a big way towards the cost of a new bumper

I'd be leery about chinese manufactured winch. I've unfortunately bought two (both Milemarkers) and both failed within about 2 years. before that time the corroded terribly. So that was like tossing about $1000 in the trash can. I actually mailed them back to Milemarkers CEO and told him he made a junk product. All new winches look good out of the box, but you'll own if for much longer than the limited warranty period.

The 12K Ramsey I bought in 1996 still works, so does the 12M warn and the two Warn 9.5 xps (perfect winch) and the 16.5 Warn I bought. So I bought a Warn M8000 and a syn cable and hawse (aluminum) fairleed. I'm a little skeptical of the winch shootout (often referred to).

I have a 6 mos old Bestop High Rock front bumper. The winch sits up a bit too high for me so I ordered another bumper so the winch can drop inside it, not blocking the cooling stack, and it won't say steal me. My High Rock was only $250 (local overstock), so while a good solid bumper, i can sell it for that, lesson learned.

Yes, with a winch plate like the smittybilt, warn or rough country. The warn plate is about $300 though and the RC and Smitty are about $150 and do the same work.

The Hawse fairlead is for synth rope. For steel you want rollers. Whatever components you use for steel rope DO NOT reuse them if you ever go with synthetic later such as snatch blocks and fairleads. The steel rope will grind down the metal and possibly leave burrs and scratches, damaging your new synthetic line.

Hit or miss and opinion based. I have personally seen Warns fail as well. I know so many wheelers running budget winches with no problems. Seeing Warns fail, to me doesn’t justify their extreme cost. If I bought a $300 Engo and it failed and Engo neglected to warranty making me to buy a new one, I’d only be out $600.

Although, I can see why YOU run Warns and Ramsey, cause you have had the bargain brands crap out on you. It is a slippery slope.

I would go with Smittybilt XRC-8 or 10 with the syn winch line.
I do not off road a lot so can't justify spending the money on a Warn or Ramsey.

My budget for a winch is about 1k.
I have two options: either I go with factory bumper, and a nice $5-600 winch, and have some cash leftover for something new, or I buy a nice and fresh little stubby bumper along with the winch for $4-500 and have nothing left over for other mods.

I agree with 3JKs1H1, chinese product scares me. For $300, I'm a little skeptic, but nevertheless leaning towards it for the cheap price.

For about $4-600, what winches would you suggest? I'm thinking 8k-9k max, and the whole synthetic thing isn't impressing me much... In my eyes, it's a waste considering steel is more durable and cheaper to replace. Safety-wise, I can keep my distance and put a dampening cloth.
Smittybilt XRC8 a good idea? Also very cheap ($300)

On another note, would anyone suggest (either from personal experience, or second hand experience) a specific bumper? My gf doesn't approve of a stinger, so I'm stuck with a stubby bumper. I have a white Sahara '12.

I'm looking for everyone's 2 cents! :) they pile up to make terrific ideas ;)

I got a HighRock bumper for 400$

I spend 730$ on the winch though, but you can go slightly cheaper, I got a Warn VR1000 with synthetic cable, you can get a VR10000 with metal cable for 600 or less (plus 50$ rebate)

How much do you off road?? I go maybe eight to ten times a year, for me to drop a lot of money on something that I might use once or twice a year is something I can't justify for myself.

ha and I just now noticed the picture I posted of the JCR bumper features a winch with what appears to be steel cable, but with a hawse fairlead. Wonder who set that picture up...:whistling:

I looked into JCR, found some pretty neat bumpers. My goal for a bumper is to have a non-hidden winch mount, light tabs, D-ring mounts, fog light mounts, maximum entry level, and most importantly, a bull bar slanted about 70 degrees (kind of like a stinger with a chopped off "sting", made into a /--\ shape, if that makes sense)

I have the JCR Dagger Pre-Runner bumper and the Smittybuilt X20 Comp 10k. Can't really give too much feedback right now as they are both sitting in the garage waiting to be installed. Too bad I am out of town this week, so they have to wait.

One thing that I like about the JCR's is that they come bare metal. Gives you the freedom to either paint it, bed line, or powder coat it. I have a friend of a friend that does powder coating, so the choice for me was easy.

As far as the winch; I wanted something with synthetic line and something that could get dunked in water. Living in the PNW, we have a lot of water around. First time out with my Jeep, I went through a lot of water bumper deep, so I don't want to have to worry about it. I believe the manual said it was rated at IP68; 8 meaning it can be submerged underwater and still run.

I hope to get this installed next week when I am back home from work.

Next I want the JCR Rear Bumper and Tire Carrier; though that's gonna have to wait for my wallet to catch up.

After lots and lots of research, I finally found a thread I deemed worthy of noting. It's quite a shame that it is not located on our forum, but nevertheless proved to be very useful:

Anyhow, I've narrowed my choices down to 3 options:
1- JCR Dagger Front Prerunner $470
2- JCR Crusader Front Prerunner $511
3- Smittybilt XRC $510
(I don't believe any of them include shipping, so that's an extra Benjamin towards each)

I can't decide between the 3 of them, but am leaning more towards the Crusader. I will post pictures of the 3 bumpers in a second.

IMO of the above JCR Dagger hands down. As far as your GF not "approving" of a stinger, grow a pair and get one if that's what you want. Unless of course it is both your vehicle, and you only have the one.
