2.5 to 5.3 swap (start to end) & cost sheet
 
I am starting a 2.5 to 5.3 swap. There are a good bit of them all over the internet, and they have been a huge help to me getting started. So HUGE thanks to everyone else who have documented their swaps. Not that I think I can give anymore info than what is what already out there, but I will try to put every step of my build on here with the costs. Also, I know I will have a ton of questions and there is no one better than the people on WF to help me with them, so thanks in advance for that. Easiest way to go is to get the engine, tranny, transfer case (if there is one), wiring harness and computer all at the same time, out of the same vehicle. Makes everything a whole lot easier to install and live with.

Lots of shops can reflash the computer to meet your needs after the swap. Lots of conversion parts are available for a LS series swap now days.

The first purchase was the motor. Soda blasted and painted it, then replaced gaskets.

Go get a free photobucket or similar account.....Google up "free image hosting", but from there expect the free thang to be not very useful or as free as they claim it is...So just deal with the missleading Google offered options first few hit pages until you find an image hosting site that really is free and doesn't clock tic you to death with tiny data limits and silly crappy ads

Once you have transferred pics to store there or at least linked them there, relax...... before you start filming, then come back here and ask for heip with posting them...once you get it down, It just gets mobetter :)

ha yeah i think i figured it out. thanks. I still have about 2 or 3 weeks before i actually start putting it in. i am waiting on all the parts to come in before i start. we started on the chevy wiring harness last night and removed all of the wires that will not be used. once the motor is in i can determine which wires will need to be lengthened or shortened (if any). there is a guy around here that can flash the ecu and remove the unneeded stuff. hope to get that done this week. will also be picking up a transmission and transfer case out of a s-10 and a disc brake rear end out of a ford explorer sometime this week or over the weekend. the only thing im really unsure about is the radiator. i have some ideas in mind but still unsure on which one i will go with.

well i got the transmission and transfer case and drive shafts that came with them over the weekend. the radiator, headers, and tachometer emulator are on the way. im that much closer to getting started!

Dude, Sweeeeet! I have an LS1/T56 sitting in my basement awaiting a swap into my 86 IROC. I have been looking for a 6 cyl jeep, but realized there are so many 4 cyl around where I live for a lot cheaper, an LS swap for one would be awesome. I just started looking and voila....your post! I was thinking a 4.8 because they are so much cheaper. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this. Thanks for posting up. I am assuming you already know, but in case you don't, LS1tech has a bunch of info on conversions.

And by the way, Great job on the painting of the block. :thumb:

Thanks guys. Well we Finally got started on it! We pulled the Jeep motor trans and t-case, welded in the NOVAK mounts, and cut and welded frame for the ac. Set the 5.3 with trans and tcase bolted together in for fitment, measured the drive shafts (front one will work) Got started on the fuel pump, should have it finished tonight. Going to try to crank it tomorrow night, wont rev up because the gm computer has to be flashed but just want to make sure it will start. This weekend we will pull everything back out, finish welding the mounts and frame ( just tacked them in to make sure they were in the right place before we made them permanent) then paint everything that way it matches the motor, because it looks pretty bad right now lol. Also I finished converting the wiring harness to a 4 wire set-up. I am using a 700r4 trans so all the electronic trans stuff was done away with. So yeah, that's where we're at.

Here's the pics of the motor in the jeep, the motor mounts, and the cut frame for the ac to work. keep in mind the motor will be pulled back out and all that will be cleaned up and painted

We got the harness hooked up, and got the motor to crank for a second or two. It was originally thought that the motor would crank, just not rev without the security stuff being taken out of the computer, but it will actually make it crank but not run. We poured a little gasoline in the throttle body and that made it run for about 5 seconds or so, long enough we could tell there was no knocking or anything. The next step I guess is to pull everything back out. Oh also, we put a set of exhaust manifolds out of a late model G8 on the motor and it seems they will work fine.

been a while since i have posted any updates, was out of town for a few weeks. Thanks for the compliments. Yeah, that thirdgen would be bad fast with a lsx swap, we have definitely made plans for it. As for the Jeep, we have now got the computer programing done, drive shafts back, radiator in, and are started on the paint. we got it to run, did a burnout in the garage, and tore everything back out for paint. we are repainting the whole thing back black, and i am putting bed liner on the floor. anyone have any cons for putting the bed liner in? i will post more pics later

No cons from me on the bedliner. It's one of the best things I did to mine. I have a tip for you, in case you haven't ran across it somewhere else. I bought a carton of foam ear plugs at walmart when I did mine. You squish em up and put them in the open bolt holes in your floor where you seat and other things were bolted. It's quick and easy and they pop right out when you're finished.

Good idea on the ear plugs, I'd have never thought of that.

Glad to see this is turning out so well, the LS engines are one of the best options for engine swaps available.

I have been thinking hard about doing this swap. Keep up the good work! If I do it I will use the engine out of a Trailblazer since it has an aluminum block. I think the 5.3 with my 6spd would get pretty good mileage compared to the 4.0L

Does the factory gauge cluster work correctly?

Why would it need heavier load springs? The LS V8 is lighter then the Inline6! The Iron block engine is 30lbs or 40lbs lighter and the Aluminum engine is 90lbs lighter.

when i added the lift i had the option of going with the 4 or 6 cylinder springs, i went with the 6. they said either will work fine. and the ear plugs are a great idea! I have used them in the past for other such things. the 5.3 is out of a 2001 silverado. (if that is what you mean) i went with the older style motor because i prefer drive by cable rather than by wire. and i dont think i have mentioned this before, but i got a throttle cable out of a s10 and it could not have worked better.

you should do it for sure, it has been a blast! just make sure you are not rushed and can take the time to do everything right. all of the gauges will work except the tachometer and novak makes a thing that you wire in to make it work. i bought it but have not hooked it up yet

I just ordered another 4.0L this week for about $700 after tax, and it has 100k miles on it. I wish I could have taken this opportunity to do a bigger and more powerful motor but there are just so many things that make it impossible for me right now... plus that would just mean I'd have to go ahead and get rid of my D35. I just couldn't afford to do it!

Bummed! Nice build! Looking forward to seeing this thing done

I have a 93 Nissan Sentra SE-R that I am swapping the engine on now. Once that is done I will have something I can drive daily and swap my jeep!
Is your engine an aluminum or iron block? I know the 5.3HO is alum., but im not sure what years it came in.
Have you road tested the truck yet?

actually, from what i have been told, the D35 will hold up just fine unless you are doing some serious crawling. I had originally planned on doing the 8.8 swap, but have changed my mind and am going to keep the d35. If it doesn't hold up... no biggie, ill just swap in the 8.8. they are readily available and from what i understand, there is a company that sells a kit with the brackets you weld on and it bolts right up.

mine is the iron block. i have not road tested it yet, but we did enough to tell there won't (shouldn't**) be any major problems once we get it all put back together. good luck on your swap, it'll be a fun little project for sure
