350 engine swap... axles???????
is an axle upgrade really a must? i am swapping the motor to a chevy 350 in two days......
88 yj 4.2
chevy 350 with auto tranny (in two days)
6in bolt on coil conversion lift
33in mudders (soon to me 35)
daily drive but also rock crawl alot and mud
will a ford 8.8 or d44 bolt up without any fab? (dont forget about the coil conversion)
what gear ratio would you also recommend?
if i do need to swap axles, what about only swapping the rear? (matching gear ratio of course)
Since you are going balls out on all of the other pieces I'd say you might as well change out the drivetrain also. :D
With your bolt on coil Conversion. How does it work with the new control arm/trac bar/coil/shock brackets on the axle itself? The setups I've seen have all been weld on. And if that's the case might as well find a pair of 44's from a Waggy or something to throw under there.
At the minimum you will want to ditch the rear. The D35 will not hold up to wheelin with a 350 up front. :D
thanks for the advice, i will swap the rear for sure and if i have trouble down the road i will swap the front at that time. i will also get pics tomorrow of the kit to show how everything is set up now. im not familiar with upgraded axles for the jeeps but is a 8.8 or a 44 stronger? i want to have disk brakes for sure. i found an 8.8 from an explorer with disk brakes and he wants $350 each axle, does that sound like a fair price to you?

does anyone know where i can get a transfercase shorting kit? and how much.
i need a new fuel tank that has a pump for f.i. (since the jeep is carb now)
i also will be making a custom dash since i need to do some rewiring for the tach and speedo anyway.
can you guys think of anything else that will be needed?
The 8.8 will be the better axle for you to swap. Mainly because it still continues with the 5x4.5 bolt pattern that your current axles use.
