Made some tube fenders

I finally got my kid to show me how to post pics from the phone I made some tube fenders front and rear for the jeep got the LED lights all hooked up today I think they turned out pretty cool for a first attempt, the rear set cost about 25$ and the front 30$+ the LEDs I also made the front bumper. The bumper is 1 3/4 120dom the bumper is stock and plated on the inside for strength. The fenders and side step are 1 1/2" 120dom and plated with 1/8" plate.I kept the stock fender underneath some what for mounting and to keep the side plate.

Thinking of making my own too, just got to get the metal.

Thanks

Very Nice did you use a bender on the tube portion? Just curious because i am going to be attempting them as well and dont have a bender to use.

Mostly the tube fender connecting to the stock fender. Trying to figure out which is the best way to connect the two.

If i sent you my email would you email the pictures of the process?

I have a JD2 tube bender and notcher they have more then paid for them selves.I will take pictures of the connections and stuff.I left the top of the stock fender underneath the new one so it has the original support and where the front of the fender bolts on i made a gusset and used the same bolts.Leaving the top of the fender helps keep them level and makes it easy to line up the hood latch.on the down part I welded some tabs on and bolted them through the body. The top of the plate is welded to the fender under the hood line which is great for hiding the welds.that tub is thinner than i thought lol

That's kind of what I thought. It would be a whole lot easier to just build off of the stock fender.

jerryj 04-23-2012 09:56 PM

It is super easy I formed the tube, cut the fender ,zip tied it to the jeep made a card board templet the hardest part was hooking up the lights.I think it looks awesome leaving the stock fender part.I cant wait to see how many people ask where I got them. The rear was even easier.Im making a sweet set for my friends XJ.

EMTJEEP 04-23-2012 10:40 PM

How far did you bend the pipe for going down the side of the fender? The rears looked easy too. Did you weld rear to the tub or did you just bolt it on?

aelwero 04-23-2012 10:54 PM

those front gussets are the bomb :) did you plan them that way or did they accidentally figure themselves out? One of these days I'll get around to fabbing some JK tubies. One of these days...

I didnt check degrees just counted the pumps but I just held the stock plastic flare over the piece i was bending until it looked the same. The first one was tough but i took measurements before each new bend so the other side was easy and amazingly matched perfectly. The rears bolt on the tub is so thin I think bolts will hold better then welds on it.

The front gussets took 3 tries to get a shape i liked and i really liked what I ended up with.I was so proud of my self til I looked at the Poison Spyder sticker on the hood and realized its one of his legs lol.

I know the feeling exactly :)
FWIW, they don't really look like a copy of anything.

Ok I guess I can just play with the bender until I get a bend I like. The bolting on the rear makes sense and it is pretty thin on the tub. But I'm thinking of doing corner guards so I'll probably just end up welding them on.

GriffsTJ 04-23-2012 11:35 PM

What did you use for leds. My friend and i just made some tube flares and im not finding many lights i like but yours are what i want. Can you take some close ups on how they are mounted? Thanks

LED Side Marker Light kit

Probably not what he has but they are good and what I had on my YJ.

EMTJEEP 04-23-2012 11:42 PM

LED Side Marker Light kit

These are with the side markers.

jerryj 04-23-2012 11:52 PM

Its a Genright light kit 60$ the front has a rubber bushing that goes through a 3/4" hole the side has a metal bracket that goes under the tube I didnt like it there and mounted it to the tube. You also need a 18$ relay

Yeah I will remove the tabs and weld them to the corner guards if i get them some day.I just played with the bender til I got a bend I liked.I think the down was 9 pumps and the turn in bends were almost 90degrees.I sent you a message I will try to get the pics of the plate cut and tube bent.

erickpl 04-24-2012 11:08 AM

Those are some really nice looking fenders. Probably the nicest I've seen done by an individual that didn't buy them ready to put on!

Kudos to you on the excellent work!
