Another Special Edition JKU "ALTITUDE"

Just read an article in AUTOMOBILE magazine about an Altitude edition....To be featured with USA basketball. Article has pictures....

Probably the worst one they've come up with yet.

Maybe I'm the only one, but for extra touches, I like it. I mean, theres no shot of the drivers seat, but it looks like it's not covered in dopey decals. Black trim on the hood and grab handle, and red trim on the bumpers instead of silver, not to mention tasteful wheels. I mean sure, it's probably not going to be worth whatever they're asking for it, but for a trim package, its certainly a bit more tasteful than the COD or Yeti. At least it will still look fine in 5-10 years, unlike the current special editions.

Although truth be told, I have no idea what this jeep has to do with basktetball; for a baller's whip, it seems pretty tame!

Its not *that* bad. No where near that Nautica version that was going around. It has black rims, colored seat stitching and a color matched bumper rather than the silver in Saharas. Not all that controversial

kbwwolf 04-23-2012 07:40 AM

Can it dunk?

HookmCowboys 04-23-2012 07:45 AM

My 1st Jeep had the Levi pkg, i couldnt strip that crap off fast enough. Took the whole CJ apart, hung the tub in our barn and painted it all white. I didnt like wearing Levis I sure wasnt going to drive em!

Pattynole 04-23-2012 08:00 AM

Doesn't look all that bad to me. But then again, I debadged my JKU Sahara the day after I brought it home.

RoobyRoo 04-23-2012 08:49 AM

If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

MarineHawk 04-23-2012 08:56 AM

Even if it's the best-looking Jeep in history, it's a conceptually-dumb idea.

Most other versions at least have some connection to the Jeep's basic purpose--off-road capability.

"Sahara" suggest that it will go thought the desert.

"Rubicon" suggests that it will climb rocks.

"COD": I'm not a big fan of a video game-related edditions, but at least it's off-road-related in that it suggests tat you can fight a PRC mechanized infantry company with it.

"Altitude": There's nothing about a Jeep that's remotely basketball-related. It seems a very stretched/forced idea. I don't think it's going to be very pupular. And the only way it could be popular is if they get converted into bling-bearing ghetto cruisers, which, if successful, will just embarass the brand and current non-ghetto Jeep owners. Just my opinion.

JIMBOX 04-23-2012 08:57 AM

:whistling: I wonder if it'll come with a pair of Michael Jordon "NIKES" hangin from the antenna ??

:dance::rofl: JIMBO

I prefer the less tasteful one with dopey decals that will be obsolete in 5 - 10 years.

Clearly, this is what was being talked about as the Volcano Edition. Either Automobile has the name wrong, or Jeep decided to be consistent across model lines.

h22lude 04-23-2012 09:21 AM

Besides the bumpers matching, the wheels and the stitching...there is nothing really "special" about it. I personally don't like the stitching or the wheels so to me it isn't worth the money. I don't mind the matching bumper inserts.

pat@fieldsauto.com 04-23-2012 09:21 AM

I'm pretty sure that's the what we have been calling the Volcano Edition, I think the article started calling it the Altitude due to the altitude floor mats:

The actual ad that features USA Basketballer Chris Paul clearly says in the lower right corner, "The 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Altitude Edition. Proudly believing in USA Basketball."

Maybe that's why the article identifies it as such.

so it sounds like its pretty much going to be about the same price as any other loaded sahara?

Lame, boring, nothing special......

Cosmic Charlie 04-23-2012 09:40 AM

And from the Jeep Blog. Looks like they went with Altitude instead of Volcano - (maybe because of the focus on Jeep fires lately...?)

 Good point. THAT would be a great marketing tool! Might as well paint flames on the hood and fenders as well. :hide:

The package costs $2,995. The colored roof and heated leather seats are $1,715 and $900, so the difference is $380. It's all cosmetic, but I think that's a pretty good deal for what is not a bad looking package. As long as there is no ugly embroidery on the seats, I'd definitely consider it.

considering the package includes some pretty nice looking wheels, I think that's actually a hell of a deal. I mean, unless folks flood the market, if you could buy the jeep at that cost, you could easily sell the wheels for 500 (still be cheaper than after market wheels) and net a tiny profit!

Clearly, this is only a 2wd verison. or something equally sinister

Sokrates 04-23-2012 10:13 AM

Another link with some pics. Imho a very nice car! Would you think this is a special "Altitude"-red or the deep cherry red?

termite 04-23-2012 10:16 AM

I kind of like the black painted Sahara wheels, the'd look better flat black though.

pat@fieldsauto.com 04-23-2012 10:17 AM

In our system - dealerconnect it is still called the volcano edition.

"Car" you say?

PS And they finally Plasti Dipped the Jeep badge on the front - nice!

This is the best looking Wrangler Unlimited yet, but just because it has a relation to basketball you guys are up in arms about it. Does Kia have any relation to dancing mice? No, but it works and it sells product. It's called a smart business move to expand into more diverse demographics, but obviously you guys who are making fun of the Altitude are too stupid to see that.

Going back and reading the prior posts I don't think a single person is "up in arms" about it being associated with basketball. Seems most people at talking about what is going to come on it and what they like/ dislike. Aside from a couple little jokes, nobody is making a big deal about it.
