Rattle in steering column

I have noticed that on my 2010 2 door sport there is a rattle that you can feel in the steering wheel/column/pedals. It only happens on bumpy roads or when coming out of my driveway..... help!!! Its driving me CRAZY!!!!

I have a thud sound as it is coming to a stop felt in the column. I have heard most Jeeps do this, and it is related to the intermediate steering shaft. Gotta love Chrysler. It may not be what you are getting, but the thud is documents on the forum.

Good to know..... I can learn to live with it. :/

GM had a similar problem in their 1500 series 1/2 ton PUs and Tahoe/Suburbans. They can rattle and thump yet not dangerous, just an annoyance. You can always ask the dealer to replace it.

i had a small rattle on my 12 as well. never rattled going straight and could only feel it while turning.
ended up being something in the airbag assemblyin the steering wheel

Yeah I had an 03 chevy 1500 and put alot of miles on it thumping. My Jeep has the exact same sound to it..... gotta love it

It is the upper intermediate steering shaft as mentioned. If your jeep is under warranty you can have it replaced and it won't thud or make any noise for a few months but then it will return.

I can live with it as long as its not dangerous.

I just had my rattle fixed 4/24. There is a tech notice out on this problem and a savy dealer can find it. It has pictures of the problem and how to correct the rattle. The fix amounted to taking off the airbag assembly and adding a small felt or spong cushion about 1 inch square underneath the airbag assembly. Took an hour to finally find out about the tech issue after driving and messing with it. Then the fix took 30 minutes. My dealer had the part in stock. Good luck.

I have a 2012 JKU Rubicon and have also noticed the rattle recently. I've only had my rig 7 months but it has A LOT of climbing miles. Interesting to note...when I release the 'adjustable steering' clamp the rattle goes away. So, I'm thinking in my case it has something to do with the adjustable steering. Will be taking it to Jeep for a warranty check up and will post my findings.

Same here. Airbag cover had moved somehow. Replaced the cover and it went away.

If it is the shaft.... I lubed mine last August (I think) and has yet returned :)

I had same problem. First dealer replaced intermediate shaft and majority was gone. Went back and replace airbag for "known" issue and all is good now.

Called dealer and advised I know what it is! Going in Monday with pics and these posts! Also will make tech drive it with me! Thanks again

My rattle can be felt in the horn button, mostly I drive with a finger on the button to stop the re-occuring rattle over bumps.
I had the dealer look for the rattle once so far, and will let them know about it again next visit.
Small aggravation.

10 minute fix - rattles no more

Have had a rattle under the steering wheel button of my 2012 2dr Wrangler for about 4months---only noticed it sometimes in a turn and always on gravel but never pavement. Took it in and drove over a gravel road with the tech. The tech knew immediately what was causing the problem. Piece of foam [spacer] under the horn button had worked loose. Took him a couple of minutes- replaced foam and taped for extra measure. No more rattle. It WAS driving me crazy.

I wasn't back in the work area with him but he said there are 4 ?bolts-screws? ?18mm? which needed to be taken out to get the button off.

Anyone else ever done this? Thought about trouble shooting myself before taking in but was unsure how to remove button...regarding such as airbag, clockspring, etc.

Thanks
