More expensive shocks worth it?
 
After searching through multiple different types of shocks and all different prices I can't tell the difference between the expensive shocks and the average priced ones. The best I can tell is better cooling and adjustability.
I was thinking of going with either the Rock Krawler RRD shocks which can be upgraded to a resevoir, or something like the Bilstein 5100's.
The RRD's are 150 a piece vs the 80 of the bilsteins but they do look more heavy duty. I'm not sure if it's worth it going with something like that or Fox shocks or something similar.
I do a lot of desert driving at moderate speeds sometimes but I always like doing trails.

I also want to try to find a way to run the air/hydraulic bump stops without buying one of the expensive 600 dollar kits for just the front. Just need to find a way to mount the can's somewhere.

This will get a lot of responses. I'm subscribing cause I want to add new shocks when I add my 2.5'r and want a good shock but really don't want to break the bank in the process myself......

Everybody loves the Bills.

I ran them and thought they ride to stiff.

I'm running the TF 9550's now. Still a little on the stiffer side but more tolerable.

Shock choice is very subjective. Choose wisely.

The main reason I went with Fox 2.0 shocks over Blisteins 5100 was after seeing them side by side. Fox was a much beefier shock and according to the shop lasts longer

how does the Fox ride (on road and off)... i'm curious, i've heard a lot of good things about them from my local shop.... i passed on them for now. but i've heard they're a bit more plush than the BDS shocks I'm running presently... which are a little rough on road... off road, no complaints at all! :D

we've had pro comp, old man emu, fox reservoir shocks and now kings.

so we've bought a $40 shock all the way up to a 1,000 dollar shock and there really isn't much difference for what we do with our jeeps.

light rock crawling and daily driving with the occasional desert trips.

the only real difference is if you want a soft, medium, or hard (stiffest) riding shock.

quadratec has a very informative shock advisory chart to look at.

our 2011 had fox reservoir shocks and it rode great on and off the road. i'd choose old man emu over fox shocks for on road and off though.

Does Radflo make shocks for Jeeps? I hear of Kings and Fox a lot. Not sure how they ride- I also do not like a very stiff ride.

I here OME is a great on road shock also. Why is that, what makes it better?

I was actually considering the Rancho adjustable shocks before I got caught up in the Bilstein hype.

Mine are running great. I like the feel both on and off road so far. Not running reservoir though, just the standard 2.0 gas.

I think the weight of the jeep plays a big role.

Heavier bumpers/winch, armor, skids, etc.

I don't have any weight added to my JK but when I had passengers it seemed to soften up the ride :confused:

Bilstein's have a lifetime warrantee so if there is ever a problem they will replace them, Fox is 1 year.

True but the warranty has a lot of loop holes to it including off road use or modified vehicles which they do not warranty and the life time warranty is only against manufacture defect to be determined by them, not normal wear and tear. Since I do off road and have a lift, the life time warranty wouldn't even apply to my Jeep. Wouldn't even get a year warranty for that matter.

If warranty is the main concern for a off road vehicle then BDS should be a main factor. They actually warranty for off road use and modified Jeeps.

I've been running Old Man Emus for about a year and they've been great.

As compared to my old sport shocks, the OMEs allow for far less bounce--the jeep still slams over potholes in that loveable jeep fashion, but it doesn't keep bouncing afterwards. The dampening far exceeds my sport stockers.

Great feedback so far, more than I expected. The whole shock world seems a little confusing at first to me with dampening and rebound and stuff.
When is a stuff ride better vs a soft one or a reservoir better vs an emulsion shock?

That was 8 years ago. Their new warranty statement includes a lot of new limitations to their warranty not to mention you have to keep receipts as proof of purchase is required. Warranties are getting less valuable these days as companies look to cut cost. It is not just limited to shocks. Fewer and fewer tool companies consider tool lifetime warranty anymore too. Most Snap-on trucks now won't warranty a tool unless you buy off their truck. Craftsman are more and more moving to a limited lifetime warranty were proof of purchase is required and it has to be a manufacture defect. Very few still have the full lifetime warranty. But here is Blisteins Warranty statement.

*Warranty Details:
Krupp Bilstein of America warrants its gas pressure shock absorbers against defects in workmanship and materials for as long as you, the original purchaser, own your car.
If at any time after purchase or installation, the shock malfunctions and Bilstein determines it to be defective, we will either replace it or repair it.
There are only a few exceptions to this warranty. They include:
1) original equipment shock absorbers - which are warrantied by the original equipment manufacturer, 2) improper installation, 3) racing, driving competition or off-road use, 4) use on modified or other than Bilstein-recommended vehicles.
Bilstein's liability for a defective shock absorber is limited to replacement of shock with a new or reconditioned Bilstein shock absorber. Rubber mounting hardware and labor charges are not covered by the warranty. Note: Other exclusions may or may not apply in certain states or rare circumstances. Proof of purchase required to process warranty.

Nah, it might say that on paper but they will fix it. Most of us use their products on our crawlers and when if ever one fails they repair it at no cost other than freight there.

the other thing I forgot to mention is at least they give more warranty that any of the other premium shock manufacturers

I wouldn't say that even though most don't have as good. BDS seems to at least in writing gives as good a warranty. That includes all their parts they sell not just shocks. That's why many quality off road shops deal with BDS lifts over others.

Notice I said premium shock manufacturers lol.....a 47 dollar shock is alot different than a 100+ shock. I had some BDS ones on a rig and although they were better than the RC shocks, they were still pretty stiff. BDS overall makes some good stuff with a great warranty (have a buddy who sells and installs them), but they are far from a premium shock manufacturer who only makes shocks.

I agree, they are more a suspension company and less a shock company but still offers a good warranty. But it is still worrisome that Blistein has now included they don't warranty off road and modified vehicles. Whether they are not pushing it at this point, how about a few years down the road. And does anyone really say when trying to get a new replacement, Hey I was off road with my rock crawler and my shock went out I need them replaced. If you said that, I would guess they may say tough luck but maybe not. But they clearly added it to their warranty statement for a reason. They may just be phasing it in since the older statement didn't have this in it.

Saying that, manufacture defects usually show up fairly quick anyways compared to normal wear and tear.

I switched to the Bilstein 5100's :thumb: I do have heavier F&R steel bumpers, a winch, etc. :whistling:

The Bilstein 5100's have made a remarkable difference on Mtn Trails and she does better in curves :D

Anyone using the teraflex tuned Fox shocks?
I started eye balling those today. not priced to bad for a resevoir shock and they have a long travel for prerunning.
dont know if I would want to double the price of my shocks to go with them vs the 5100's though.

I have always been told the OME shocks are the best on-road shock for a Jeep. If you want the nice plush ride. And I was very close to buying them. I know this might sound bad but the yellow color of them just would look odd on my Jeep. They are IMO the ugliest shock made for a Jeep. With that said I spent the extra $600 and bought the Teraflex Fox with remotes a month ago. These ride about the same as my stock Rubicon shocks but look so cool on my Jeep! :thumb: Still waiting to do any heavy off-road yet but so far they are nice.

I'm running the Bilsteins on my '12 JKUR and hated them the first thousand miles. After a trip to Moab they were broke in and the ride is perfect. I was looking for something that would smooth out the ride on rough forest roads and these are the first shocks that actually work. I also went with the AEV springs as they are a progressive rate spring. This alone is a monumental deal on lifted Jeeps. I was running BDS springs and shocks and I think my fillings in my teeth are still loose from that suspension.

What size lift is that your running? Im going with the 2.5 rock krawler kit and those same shocks Im thinking. going to be using it mainly for trails and desert prerunning.
That's the reason im going with there kit since they have progressive coils

I have the older 2.5" Teraflex coils with 3/4" spacers. So i'm sitting lil higher then a newer 2.5". You will love the Rock Krawler stuff.
