Automatic transmission problems/swap
This is my first post on this forum(Or any forum concerning jeeps). I have a 97 Wrangler Sport 4.0 with automatic transmission. This jeep has a very interesting and expensive history. My oldest son bought it and drove it for awhile before the radiator needed replacing. He replaced it but neglected to put antifreeze in it before it froze. He was in the middle of a divorce and couldnt afford to get it fixed. So I bought it from him and paid it off($4000). Had the motor fixed ($3500). The block they used had a hairline crack in it. Fortunately they discovered this before I picked it up. They found another block and fixed it. But before I got home it slung a rod.Had it towed back to the shop. They made it good. Finally got it home and ran it for about a week before the engine locked up. Once again they made it good. None of this cost me anything extra except towing. So I finally get it home again. My youngest son decides to see if it will crawl over a big round bale of hay. Everything that is spinning gets hay wrapped around it and ruins all the seals. It catches on fire due to the friction. He drives it into a deep mud hole to put out the fire. Water fills the transmission. And somehow in all of this the gears in the frontend lose some teeth. So I get the front end and the transmission fixed.($1500) Then I drive it through a deep mud hole. Once again the transmission has water in it.

And thats where I am today. What should I do about the transmission?
1. Attempt to repair the transmission myself?
2. Buy a new transmission and bolt it in?
3. Take it back to the transmission shop.
4. Replace the automatic transmission with a manual transmission?

I think I perfer to install a manual transmission but I would have to add a clutch and clutch petals etc... Dont know how much is involved there.

There are breathers on top of the trans/axles. extend them, make sure the lines aren't cracked, or even broken in half. The front runs somewhere near the top of the radiator, the rear I think hooks to the fuel inlet hose.
The trans is the lowest point without being extended.

Obviously you have a problem to fix, but the above should keep it from happening anymore.

The front is hooked up correctly. The rear one was just left hanging. I am going to extend it when I get the transmission fixed.

While they have the trans out to fix would be the best time for the extension. On some trans (not sure what ones, 32RH I think) you have to close the current vent and drill in a new one to extend. then they run them up the firewall.
