Bigger Tires. First Post.
 
Okay, so...
I have a '97 Wrangler. Everything on it is stock.
With a 3" body lift, what size tires could I fit on it without rubbing? My friend told me I could get 33"s on there no problem, but I'm not really syure.
Also, what size wheels should I get?
In technical terms, that is.

i would install a 2" budget boost kit (2" spring spacers and longer shocks) and a 1.25" BL/MML instead of a 3" BL.
that will give you 2" more ground clearance and enough room for 33s.

or if you have a bit more money install a 3-4" spring lift kit. that will give you a better ride.

Haha, yea. Deffinatley DO NOT go any higher than 2" on a body lift and even thats a bit questionable. Go RE 2" budget boost and JKS 1.25" bl like suggested. Then you can clear 33's no problem and ride without worry of havin such a junky lift.

3" of body lift is way too much IMO. 2" is even pushing it for me. With a body lift you dont gain any ground clearance, you're simply lifting the body higher off the chassis. I'm going to agree with Nico here, get a 2" bb with new longer shocks, and a 1.25" body and motor mount lift. That set up will allow you to run 33's and give you more ground clearance. I think a 3.5" suspension lift would be the ultimate set up for 33's, but if money is tight the bb and 1.25 body and motor mount lift will work fine.


For 33x12.5x15 tires go with a 15x8 wheel with 4" or less backspacing. The style is up to you (black steelie, alloy, ect...) but IMO some nice strong alloy wheels look much better than black steelies...

well in order to gain some ground clearance dont you think increasing tire height works?

granted a body lift does NOTHING for gaining ground clearance but in turn adding taller tires you are thus increasing the ground clearance ?

True, putting bigger tires on does increase ground clearance, but assuming he has 30's on there now then goes to 33's he'd only be gaining around 2" of clearance...But if he put a 2" bb on he'd be gaining about 4" with 33's. When i said a body lift doesn't give you any gain in ground clearance i just simply meant the lift itself, not the addition of bigger tires.

Hey biscuit, to answer your question yes 33's will fit with your 3"bl. Does it look ghetto? Hell yes, but a lot of rigs are out there doing it everyday, some dealers even do it to brand new jeeps. It is not the best way to go and I would heed the advise of those above me and swap out for a spring lift asap. HTH.

I am in the "3in is too much" crowd. Even 2" is too much, but we don't need to go there. At 3" the puck is simply too stressed and too weak, and can easily break.

with that said, is it true a body lift only lifts the body off the frame, but with a body lift you are actually gaining a real (example) 1.25" of tire clearance. With a suspension lift, atleast from what I can tell (havent studied it too hard) you aren't really gaining 3.5" of tire clearance, only adding 3.5" of suspension travel. The bumpstops control how much clearance you gain. Basically, if you put on a 3.5" suspension lift, and need 3.5" of clearance, you need to extend the bumpstops so that you have the same suspension travel as stock..gaining 3.5" of tire clearance, but loosing 3.5" of suspension travel. With a body lift, its true clearance based on the size of the pucks.

anywho, to run 33s, get yourself a JKS 1.25" body lift, 1" Motor mount lift, and 2" budget boost spacers with shocks.

33s make the jeep very sluggish.

eh it goes 80 with no problem if you ahve the 6cyl with the manual!

and as for wheels go with 15X8 with either 4.0 or 3.75 in backspacing

yup, that depends on the pucks. With the 3" bl he should have 3" of clearance. In other words if he is running 30s now that are 10" wide that fits nicely and the bump stops hit before the tire is in the flares he should have enough space to run 35s (by 10) with out hitting too. 35-30=>5/2=>2.5 per radius.

you can have 10" of suspension lift but if the shocks or the springs dont bottom out first you will compress all the way to the stock bump stops and if you have bigger tires, they will end up rubbing the flares. In reality the shocks or springs will bottom out first.
