Parking Brake Help
 
The parking break wire in my TJ is becoming incredibly lose. I'm hoping to avoid going to a repair shop 1) to save money 2) get some more experience working on the Jeep. Anybody know how I can fix this at home?

Pull the drum off and there is an adjustment in there

also, up underneath at the bracket where the cable from the lever goes into a bracket and splits into the two ebrake cables to each side, is adjustable. there is a long bolt in the center where you can take some slack out of the cable...check often as you are adjusting it, it will tighten up quick and you dont want it to pull the two ebrake cables to much, causing them to wear your ebrake pads out

X2. This is the best. I have an 05 and this is the best way to adjust

You can remove the drums to adjust the brakes, but you don't have to.
The backing plate has a hole in it that will allow you to adjust the brakes without removing the drum or the tire. You only need an adjusting tool or a screwdriver.

This is good info Kev,:thumb: The cables may need to be adjusted from time to time, but you should always make sure that the brake shoes(at the wheels/drums) are adjusted properly before adjusting the cables.

I was thinking almost opposite. The brake adjustment in the drum is for initially setting clearances on new shoes, and then after they should be self-adjusting. if you can adjust them after that, then there is something wrong in the "self adjusting" portion of it that may need to be looked at.

My experience stems from an axle swap where I put brand new brakes on a d44 before it went under it, so they were at factory specs for clearances/adjustment. So to get a tight lever had to adjust the ebrake adjustment up under the tub.

Your right johnbob, both are good places for adjustment, but something else is going on if the star adjuster is not keeping it tight down in the drum

i guess the OP needs to state if the ebrakes are not holding...or if the lever has to much travel in the cab to make them grab.

I have had my Tj for 8 years and i have never used mine not once. Why do people use them?

i remember my big wheel had a "power slide" lever...i assumed when i saw the lever that's what it was for!

Usually the self-adjuster on the rear drum brakes hardly work, if at all. I manually adjust mine at every oil change.

The self adjuster works by backing up and braking, do this several times in a row and you'll be set. that's how all drum brake self adjusters work.

Because it's a good habit to get into. Things have a way of happening. You can park on a hill steep enough to overcome the compression of the engine, the trans can pop out of gear, anything.

I agree, they work ok at first, but then we add water, brake dust, dirt, salt, rust, and for Jeeps, Mud. Then they become useless.

Sounds like a guy with an automatic transmission to me! :rofl:
My Jeep has an automatic transmission & I only use the E-brake when I haul the Jeep on my trailer.

I'd trust the parking pawl of an automatic less than I'd trust engine compression.

I agree with you 100%, it's just that where I live the closest thing we have to a hill, is a bridge or a freeway overpass. In most places my Jeep would not roll away even if I left it in neutral. I use the E-brake when I think I need it, but that's not very often.:)
