woodland Hills Area

Good Evening. I'm spending Saturday night chapperoneing a 13 year old party for my fiance's aunt....(looking forward to it...)

Anyway, I'm spending the night at woodland Hills. None-the-less I'm headed out there with my Jeep. Looking at Google Maps I'm sure there are some trails out in that area. Tonight is Valentines and therefore most of you are busy as am I. Tomorrow however, I shall tackle my offroad book "Backcountry Roads of Southern Cali and see if I may find a 4 rated trail or so (rating out of 10).

So...Who's in....

Another thought is Hungry Valley...or Mt Pinos if there's no snow to make it impassable.

Know of any trails out in Malibu or Woodland Hills area?

MrBash 02-15-2008 02:41 AM

I flipped through many trails an did not find anything with a difficulty rating of 4 closer than 80 miles from woodland hills.

So with careful consideration that my TJ is still stock with only 31" Duelers...I've decided to travel the Sierra Pelona Trail. This is an easy trail that crosses Rowher Flat Trail (black diamond). I will not be crossing over Rowher Flat trail because it requires a modified vehicle with good articulation. This trail leads to Rowher Flats OHV area. A place for all to have fun.

Here's the location...
N34 34.80' W118 22.07
You can google this GPS Coordinate and get direction from your home.

The trail is 14 miles in length and ranges from 2,400 - 4,600 elevation.

I'm there. I encourage all to join. Sorry I can't run the hard trails yet...I'm eager to but I don't want to break my TJ. I'll be cruzing with the Wifey enjoying the scenery. To be quite honest I just might try some parts of the Rowher Flats Trail. Who's coming?

tiny terror 02-15-2008 09:14 AM

Hey Bash, have you got a lift at all? Or are your 31s stuffed?

Reason I ask is that, compared to a lot of the guys, my jeep is pretty damned stock. I have a 2 in BB and a 1 inch BL with my 31s and I run John Bull up in BigBear with no issues.

(I just went to the hammers last weekend, so I need to hang out with the kids this weekend :D)

MrBash 02-15-2008 10:21 AM

I'm 31's stuffed to wheel wells. that 2 inch lift gives you a lot more clearance than I have believe me. I just e-mailed quadratech asking what the best 4" lift would be with-out losing factory style ride softness. My Jeep is mainly for offroading but I do take long drives to get to trails and I don't want to be bouncing all over the place.

I saw a 4" lift on quadratech for about 600 bucks but it's only for springs. I want to get a nice lift done all at once. I'm a do-it-right the first time kind of guy.

Here's some more info for you guys.

Sierra Pelona Trail

The Sierra Pelona Trail offers some good views of Bouquet Lake in the Rowher Flat OHV Area, with a combination of the easy sections and difficult sections. If you want an even tougher trail then the Sierra Pelona Trail can be used to access the Rowher Trail.
You begin and end the trail at Bouquet Canyon Road located to the north of Bouquet Road.

Start by following the Martindale Canyon via the rough dirt road and cross over the wash. From here the road becomes wide enough for a vehicle to pass easily.

The Tougher Trail
You can move on to the tougher Rowher Trail from any of the intersections that cross the Sierra Pelona Trail here. This trail is famous for being very difficult and the less experienced should not attempt the same. The section of the Rowher Trail that moves north of the Bouquet Lake is the most challenging with steep grades. Your 4WDs undergo severe tests for traction and wheel articulation here. Coupled with some superb views of the Bouquet Lake, this trail can be extremely distracting for the new driver.

The Basic Trail
Coming back to the main Sierra Pelona Trail, you pass the Artesian and Willow Springs. From then on trail climbs to the site of the old Sierra Pelona Fire Lookout.

When you reach the top of the ridge take the short spur to reach the east. You can get some great views from here. You can take any one of the many OHV trails here. The Rowher Flat OHV Area is located to the south of this area. The Rowher Trail has a number of easy sections, one of which leads to the site of an old fire lookout tower, the walls of which do not exist today. There is an open area here which is a good shaded campsite.

From this section you start your descent along the Sierra Pelona Ridge ending at the Bouquet Canyon Road.

Hey shant, how are you. I would love to come I'll let you know for sure on saturday with a post on the forum. I've been on this trail only once, its a nice trail not to hardcore.I went by the trail a month ago and it was closed due rain and fire hazards hopefully its going to be on open on sunday. This trail is 30mins away from my house so its no to far, here are a couple of pics of that time i was there check out the view its pretty sweet.

If its closed we can always drive up to hungry valley thats a 40min drive.

MrBash 02-15-2008 07:25 PM

Haik, I just checked the national forest road closure and it seems Rowher Flats is open. I've been up there a few times with my old bronco a few years back. There are side trails and hills we can play around on. I'm there for sure 10:00 sharp. I'm bringing 12 boiled eggs, 6 boiled potatoes, lebni, basturma, sokh, lavash, cucumbers, olives and tomatoes. That'll be our lunch for the day. Depending on how many people are showing up, I'll bring more food. Looking forward to seeing you there.

JeepGuyLJ 02-15-2008 08:23 PM

Thats cool shant, which side will you be entering the trail i guess you'll enter from sierra highway if I'm not wrong so if i do come we can have a spot to meet-up. :D

JeepGuyLJ 02-15-2008 11:23 PM

Hey shant, count me in buddy lets pick a spot to meet-up.

MrBash 02-16-2008 02:51 AM

cool Haik. Sounds great! I'm exiting Sand Canyon Rd off the 14 and entering Bouquet Canyon Rd from Sierra Hwy as you mentioned. We can meet at the corner of Sand Canyon Rd and Sierra Hwy. I'm bringing the food, you can bring the drinks if you like.

I'm currently observing "bawk" (lent) so khmichk chem khmum minchev Zadigi or.

Take exit 9 for Sand Canyon Rd 0.3 mi
Turn left at Sand Canyon Rd 2.0 mi
Turn right at Sierra Hwy 0.4 mi
Turn left at Vasquez Canyon Rd 3.6 mi
Turn right at Bouquet Canyon Rd 10.9 mi
Turn right at NF-6N08

My cell phone is listed below. Save it in your phone and PM me your number so we can communicate Sunday Morning. My buddy might follow me in his Touareg so for ow it seems we are three Jeeps.

BTW, I drove from Pasadena to Rancho tonight at 9:45pm and the 210 was bumper to bumper. All I saw were RV's pulling Jeeps and ATV's. All these people were headed to the desert for Presiden't day weekend. I have a pretty good idea there's going to be other Jeeps where we are headed.

Lookng forward to it.

JeepGuyLJ 02-16-2008 11:31 AM

That sounds awesome cant wait. Ill bring the drinks.

MrBash 02-16-2008 07:44 PM

Ok here's an update on the party.

It seems most of you might be out of town for the long weekend because usually there would have been more activity on this thread. But that's ok, we'll upload the pics and videos and you guys who went elsewhere please do the same. Picture sharing is caring.

Tomorrows party will include my TJ, one Unlimted, one JK and one VW Touareg. If anyone esle decides to join last minute, call me at (626) 826-4063 for location info. The area is off the 14 freeway exit Sand Canyon Rd. Turn left on sand Canyon Rd and drive to Sierra Hwy. We'll be at the corner of Sand Canyon Rd and Sierra Hwy from 9:45 am - 10:15am. After 10:15....we're gone!

Hey guys.

I live in Encino and would love to join you guys. I, however, left my hard top in my dad's garage and I don't feel like freezing my cashews on the trail tomorrow.

Wow, thanks for posting that pic. It looks amazing to me.

I do have a 4' lift with 33's but I think the guy I bought it from might have ghetto rigged it and I don't want to break and spoil the day.

Have a great trip guys and I hope to hook up with all of you really soon.

Stop by your local VONS in the morning and buy a pair of cotton gloves, a beanie and earmuffs. As long as your ears, hands and feet are warm, the rest of your body will remain warm as well. Put on a jacket and turn up the heater. You won't feel a thing. Your adrenaline will keep you warm. I'll see you there.

If you don't show up, you're going to miss out on the food.

Thanks for the nice comments by the way.

hedonist 02-17-2008 09:45 AM

Thanks for the invite Shant.

Unfortunately, I wont be able to make this one.

I will definitely try to make the next meet.

By the way, I love Armenian food so don't talk about it because it makes he hungry.(j/k).

The perfect trail ride is when someone brings good food.

JeepGuyLJ 02-17-2008 11:44 PM

Here are some pics i took with my cam and mrbash will upload the the video pretty soon we had a blast. Rowher flats was closed so we drove up to Hungry valley.

Hey shant, sorry dude i did't that many shots of your jeep with my cam. I can't wait till you post the video. I also didn't get any of the touareg but i was amazed at what that thing can do.

On the way there.

Getting reay to the hit trail.

Nice water fording.

Wheel blocks.

MrBash 02-19-2008 02:53 AM

So as you all know, Rohwer Flats ended up being closed. so we drove to Hungry Valley. We had a great time and hopefully more of you can make it next time.

Enjoy the video.

JeepGuyLJ 02-19-2008 04:38 PM

The video came out awesome mrbash.

Rawkon 02-19-2008 05:25 PM

looks like a fun run wish i coulda made it. that video came out sweeet!!

hey jeepguyLJ how do you like that hanson bumper? I know a few guys who have them on different rigs and they like them.

JeepGuyLJ 02-19-2008 08:32 PM

I really like it Rwak, its built solid and you get your moneys worth.

MrBash 02-20-2008 09:54 PM

Haik, how tall is your lift kit? What brand is it? How do you like it?

I'm shopping for a 4" lift kit but io have no idea what to buy. I was told Full raction 3" lift kit is good. I'm wondering if my 31" duelers will make my rig look funny with a 4" lift. I don;t want to buy 33" tires until my 31's wear down.

Rawkon 02-20-2008 10:11 PM

I'm running the RE 3.5 superflex and love it. it came out to over 4inches.

you've seen how it works. the install was easy and it looked ok with 31s.
I have zero complaints and problems with my lift

heres my lift with 31s

My kit also rides better then stock too. ive taken it on a couple 4 hour drives no problem

hedonist 02-20-2008 11:26 PM

JeepGuyLJ 02-21-2008 01:33 PM

I have a 3" Fulltraction lift. I love the lift its great for everyday driving and prefect on the freeway. And its awesome off-road.

hedonist 02-21-2008 09:18 PM

Mr. Bash, I'm up for the next one.

JeepGuyLJ, SWEET!!!!!!! Beautiful and great for everyday? PERFECT LIFT I TELL YOU.

MrBash 02-22-2008 12:37 AM

Ok Fellows...Please forgive me. I'm really trying hard NOt to post videos but I can't help it. I'm attending AA meetings about a matter of fact.

This one is a non-musical version. This has some other scenes that I wanted to add. It also shows the JK ripping his front driver side tire in the mud pit.

At the end, you will see JeepGuyLJ's jeep do the "almost flip-over" thing. It looks like nothing on the video but you had to be there. That was one scary moment.

From afar, we said we will not climb that hill. But when we got close to it...our balls got in the way. Notice all of the people surrounding us watching in amazement. Haik (JeepGuyL) Didn't I tell you NOt to climb that hill? <~~~Sarcasm.:punk:

Until our next trip...the videos are all I've got.

JeepGuyLJ 02-22-2008 02:48 PM

Ya you did shant, but i just had to.:D
