4.88 vs 5.13 for 35" tires

Is there anyone out there that has a build like mine and can help me out?!

-2009 Sahara Unlimited
- Manual Trans
-35" tires
- 2 inch lift
- 4 door

My driving: I am on the highway and I travel so I want gears that can put me around 2500 RPMs at 70-80 MPH. I do off roading but usually stick to moderate trails, not too much rock climbing.

If you have a Jeep like this then please tell me what you have your gears at! Thanks guys! :surrender:

First off, welcome to the forum. Sounds like a nice build.

For gears with the manual transmission and the description of how you will use it I would recommend the 4.88 gear ratio. If you were built up way heavier and planned on going to 37" tires some time down the road I would recommend that you go with the 5.13 ratio. The manual transmission JK's were better geared from the factory, not like the poorly geared automatics.

Mike.

Mike,

Thanks a lot for the input. I don't see me getting any bigger than the Jeep is now so I think I'm going to go with the 488.

I'd still like other Jeepers who have this same build let me know what their Jeeps are getting RPM wise while on the highway and what gears they are using! :wavey:

I wouldn't go any bigger than 4.88 for 35s with a manual trans.

I assume you've seen this chart?

4.88s put you at nearly 2800 RPMs at 70 mph in 6th gear. 80 mph is going to put you around 3000 RPM and there is no 7th gear (obviously) to shift to. I don't know if you take long drives in your JK, but I find spinning 3000 RPMs for any longer than a few minutes to be loud and somewhat uncomfortable.

MTH,

I think you are right and yes I have seen that chart. I have even contemplated going lower than 4.88 because 2,800 at 70 still seems too high for me. I like to go fast! I am thinking that I will go with the 4.88 and if my RPM's are still too much for my taste, I'll just move up to some 37" tires! What do you think about that?

If 2800 seems high at 70 and you prefer keeping it up by 80, I wouldn't think you were wrong going with 4.56s either. Don't forget you can always downshift to 5th for more power. Of course, if 37s are in the cards, then I'd steer clear of the 4.56s . . . .

If you like to go fast then trade in your Jeep. If you are being facetious, than 4.88 is where you'd want to be for a manual and 35's. For 37's go 5.13

And 4.56 is useless for a JK, pre 2012 for some reason.:thumb:

I have factory 4.10 w/auto and run 285s. I dont seem to mind the power, cranks good for me. Ive never been a chart reader. Real world butt meter works good enough for me. It would be interesting running the lower 4.88 recommended set though : )

07 2 door 35's w/ stock 4.10's but Superchip tuned. It helps drive these big boys :D

4.88's w/35's would be my choice, though you could pick up a set of used 4.10's (mine included) all day long for cheap & theyd probably fill the bill, depending on your needs. They were OK, but the 4.1 TC made a big difference in the slow stuff. If any a chance of going 37's (never say never, haha) just go w/5/13's. You can get away w/gearing choices alot easier w/a 6 speed. 6 speed Rubi, 37's 7 5.13's here.

Thanks a lot guys. Went with 5.13's AND superchip. I'm in need of new tires soon so I may upgrade to 37's just because I think it'll even it out even better. Thanks for all the advice!
