check engine light came on and speedo stopped working @ the same time.
'99 4.0 . I'm wondering if anyone else has had a simalar problem? I had a local shop put a new clutch in it for me recently and am now having some regrets.I'm not sure, but I have been thinking that they may have damaged the wiring going to the speed sensor, although I can't find any visable damage. I put my friend speed sensor from his tj into mine in an attemt to find out if my sensor was bad (did'nt help any) and now his jeep does the same thing. did my computer break his sensor? Is there some sort of computer reset that i'm unaware of? apart from the engine light and not having a working speedo, my jeep now stalls when coming to a stop and the cruise control won't work. any ideas? thanks.
i have a 98 4.0,when i hit a bump hard my airbag light comes on and the speedo and tach quit working.i think its a loose connection in the dash because if i hit the dash they go back to normal.is this basically the same problem?
I had check engine light come on, speedo go out, and stalling at intersections. 98 4 cyl TJ. Problem was squirrels. Chewed the wire from the sensor. Dealer found the problem. Much appreciated. You have lost communication with your sensor.
The speedometer gear housing must be rotated properly so the speedo gear properly engages its pinion gear. It's possibly nothing more than that. There are certain positions the housing must be at depending on the speedometer gear tooth count so count the teeth and rotate the housing so it is lined up properly. You'll find the tooth count ranges on the housing so just line up the housing to match what is indicated. Even when pointed at the right index mark, you may still have to rotate it a bit more to get the gear to engage properly.
And when the speedometer doesn't work from this problem, a Check Engine light will result. :)
I had that happen once a couple of weeks ago. Check engine light came on, speedo and tach quit working but the engine stayed running. Hasn't happened since.
did you check your code
Here's an easy way to determine why the check engine light is coming on.
(maybe it should be a sticky)
Turn the key to the accessory position then off
then accessory then off
(Basically, three cycles of accessory/off, ending up in the accessory position.)
At this point, in the odomoder area, you will see a code that corresponds to the error code.
ADDED BY GROGIEFROG: There is another way that only works on my 2004:
Start with the ignition off. Within five seconds, switch the key on, off, on, off, on. ("On" is NOT "Start" and "Off" is NOT "Lock").
- Test for Gauges
1. Hold in the trip reset button.
2. Turn key to ON position.
3. Release trip reset button.
4. Gauge and Lamp test begins
5. When odometer is finished counting codes display
6. Test is done when you see a Software Version number (e.g. 6.4) and Odometer returns to normal.

P0500- speed sensor problems.
not sure if its the sensor or if the previous owner screwed something up on the lower pinion gear piece when installing the SYE kit thats on it.
is there anyway to check the sensor itself is still working by hooking it up to a volt meter or something???
thanks in advance guys
fixed my problem...
took the speed sensor out, then the lower portion with the gear pinion on it. it seems whenever they put the SYE kit on they didnt install the gear pinion correctly, it needed to be rotated about 20-30 degrees in the whole to engage the gear with the out put shaft. there are two sets of notches on the top of it where the retaining clip screews down onto. i lined that up, reinstalled everything, test drove and everything seems to work fine now. speedo/ odometer, no apperent stalling coming to stop lights now, and cruise.
just thought i'd share
can you tell me where this speed sensor is please.I'm having this same problem and pulled out the speed sensor code.
Just replaced clutch on my 03 rubicon. Having the exact same problem. Only. All my gauges went dead and jeep wouldn't start. I disconnected the air lock and gauges work and starts but no speedometer and stalls when coming to stop.
The gear pinion was never touched. Any help appreciated
