Doing Valve Cover Gasket

Hey guys,

Gonna start pricing out everything I need to do the Valve Cover Gasket. This is gonna be the biggest mechanical job I have ever done on my own. I was thinking of getting a gasket from Rockauto.com. Anything else I need? Any other job I should do, while I am doing that?

Advice, tips, suggestions are all appreciated.

CDM Fabrication <------- Click it.:D

The guy who wrote this is a big help and knows what he is talking about.

Go to the tech write ups section scroll down to "Replacing A Valve Cover Gasket" It will walk you through the whole process.

I can't see ordering a gasket from rockauto being cheaper than getting one locally with shipping factored in. I know advance auto matches rockauto prices now too.

To be honest, I didn't even think to check local stores...that's how much of a noob I am. I just learned about rockauto awhile back, so I always just check prices there to get an idea of what I am facing price wise. I live in a small town and we have an O'rileys (our only big chain name) and our Napa changed over to some other name and a few other smaller local shops. I will check.

Also, why when looking on rockauto and even on O'rileys websites, there is the valve cover gaskets as cheap as like $3-6 but as expensive as $50? What is all that about? I was hoping to just get one that was a few bucks, not really wanting to spend $50 on a gasket.

Thanks

Grab a mid line fel-pro, you'll be fine. Should be between $6-10. Its all in the prep work, so make sure you do everything to clean the surfaces and use the sealer as directed.

If you have the 4.2 with a plastic valve cover, go ahead and invest in an aluminum one. The plastic could be the source of your leaks. Took me two gaskets to figure that out.

Great tip on the CDM fab. I am glad I read as many threads as I can.

Thankfully I have the aluminum one! :)

Can anyone answer me why the gaskets are as cheap as $3 or as expensive as $50? Whats the difference? Why would you want a $50 gasket? Just curious....learning!! :D

Cork vs rubber. I just finished install of a felpro reusable rubber gasket. 30something bucks. Very happy.

dont go cheap on the gasket, spend the money and do it once

I just replaced mine on my 4.2. I got it at oriellys they had a couple options they gave me the wrong one the first time took cove in and got the right one fixed all the leaks I had. It was 6 bucks and some silicone gasket maker the blue stuff worked great for me hardest part cleaning the old gasket off. Good luck any questions just pm me.

This is why I love this site. Was planning on doing mine as well and I don't even need to start a thread! Thanks.
