Back in the Game with 90 yj

:wavey:Hey all,

Thats right, looks like im back in the jeep game. :dance:Im originally from washington state, I've had a 91 yj 4.0l 5sp 4" lift 33's with chrome tube smittys front and back and chrome nerfs on the sides...lost that one to theft after many a memories made wheeling the naches trail and moses lake dunes as well as many other areas in the pacific northwest. Later got my hands on a 76 cj again with the same treatment but black trimmings...that one seemed to slip through my fingers a few months and a couple thousand dollars after falling in love with it...long story...

I then moved to nyc in chasing after a woman who i now happily call my wife. When my son was born we needed a family car and a 98 grand cherokee was as van as we were gonna get, already having a 5 yr old at the time the grand comfortably housed the fam. I gave it close to the same treatment but went with r.e. 4.5" springs, pro comp es9000 shocks, KOR track bar conv., jcr 1 ton steering upgrade, jks ca's and quick discos, a custom built rack an light bar combo..ultimately my mig welder was what kept this dominatrix on the road though ;)

Life reached a point where i had to let her go and spent some time :hide: with a vw passat i was working on from the day i got it (german engineering :nonono:) ...they do make good door hinges though :thumb: and when in 2 years its value fell to 3k as i just paid it off i dumped it. A free subuaru forester landed in my lap :banghead:, why of all cars it was a forester...a good runner..spacious...but ugly as sin, however i was grateful as it came in a time of need but again i found myself :hide: .....then as luck would have it, a few weekends ago i got into a little fender bender while on a weekend getaway with the fam ( oh they are ok..they were at the hotel ) I tore the hanging fender off and threw it in the back, grabbed my grill from the street, got the hood open and pulled the radiator back off the serpentine and was back in business..."dont worry kids were still going to the zoo tomorrow" :punk:

while on my way back to the hotel my lovely wife found an ad for a 90 wrangler and that following day we bought it...may have been a bit hasty but for just under 3,000 i figured it was a good start....

...so I'm back in the game, back where i belong, back in a jeep thing which im sure you all understand :D...this one does have its pitfalls...a worthless 2.5l and ax 5 trans. a little rust through on the rockers postponed by the bed-liner coating the tub received both on the undercarriage and interior, a broken speedo and passenger chair frame ( already fixed that )...oh that 2.5l....yeah knocking and smoking....had me make my first youtube video..
1990 2.5L 4CYL JEEP WRANGLER rythmic Engine tick - YouTube

I have plans/dreams of converting to a v8, was seriously considering a genIII with an sm465 trans mated to the stock 231 tc. ofcourse this will mean needing axles..44s at least unless i find a deal on something better and this constant tinkering is ofcourse the game I speak of...

for now..the little 4 banger will have to get me through the summer...i tossed around the idea of swapping an engine but everything led to more money than just rebuilding this one for now....the rocker arms and lifters showed obvious signs of wear upon inspection, according to haynes manual changing lifters means changing camshaft, so i'll be installing new r.a's, pivots, pushrods, lifters and cam, head and intake/exhaust manifold gaskets new valve stem seals and then new piston rings done poor man style....through the oil pan, no boring just a little honing (im told they will seat) before i do the rings ill run it with the new valve train components just to see if it stopped the smoking for future diagnosis purposes but I doubt it.

...I am not a mechanic...however i have always performed my own work and while i may not know all the lingo all the time my intuition and engineering mind has served me well so far and i tend to at least get a good feeling about whats wrong...although admittedly i have spent more than necessary a time or two but ...anytime ive put anything in the hands of another it always comes back f'd up. besides...with the goldmine of experience and knowledge found in the forum how can we go wrong

Be brave, you can do it, use your head, for more than this:banghead: and ask questions, do some research, plan accordingly and above all have fun...at least thats what works for me.

I look forward to leaning on some of you and helping anywhere i can.

P.s. I'm a licensed nyc contractor, master craftsman, woodworker, inventor,(some say a mcgyver lol ) artist, plumber, electrician and overall jack of all trades so to speak so if anyone thinks they can benefit from any of these...lets say a finishing question (applies to auto paint also) or you end up in a remodel and its keeping you from precious jeep time, i can help, anything at all feel free to ask.

Also..ive learned if your in the market for a yj, try to get post 90' , in 91 when things went fuel injection little things like the fuel pumps and fuel cells will work with later year conversion engines. and always pick at least a 4.0 and then double check the trans tags, you want at least an ax-15...I never knew that till researching converting this one lol...guess i got lucky with the first one being a 91 with the I6
