how to make my tj look aggressive with only 31's?

I just bought a 2001 Jeep the 2.5l and I want to make it look mean without spending more then 1500 bucks. I'm still in high school and pay for everything my self so the budget is Alittle tight :D

DieLawn19k 05-09-2012 12:40 PM

Have you taken the water wings off the front bumper yet? You could get some mud on it, take the top and doors off, all kinds of great things.

Mines also on 31s no lift not very aggressive but people stare.

Dextreme 05-09-2012 12:41 PM

Just to clarify, do you already have the 31's? Or does the $1500 include the need for new tires?

TJGARMA03 05-09-2012 12:41 PM

I put a 2.5 RC lift with 31's and it looks great. Don't let people knock on RC lift either, for the money it's worth it. When you get more money you can always upgrade later

DieLawn19k 05-09-2012 12:44 PM

Oh damn I didn't even see that you had money to spend. Have you tried some seat covers? I have the G.E.A.R. seat covers by smittybuilt on mine. They look sweet, have velcro for morale patches and my unit patches, and have freed up a considerate amount of trunk space from all the stuff I'm able to store in them. Did I mention they look badass?

kramerj12 05-09-2012 12:44 PM

^ nice Jeep and I didn't get to take the jugs off yet...I wanted to get either a 2.5inch or 3.25ich lift from RC and some aggressive 31's but found out I have to buy a new soft top and soft top hardware. -_-

You could go frameless, I always thought those looked better than OEM tops anyways.

02Prove 05-09-2012 12:46 PM

I think they look fine with 31's

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...t/IMG_0097.jpg

Then again just make sure the driver is aggressive

Everyone if going to have a different suggestion, but here is mine:

New Top/Hardware
31" DuraTrac Wranger tires
2" BB lift
Shocks if needed
Save the rest....

wow that looks nice. what kind of lift/ tire setup is that?

Sherpa 05-09-2012 01:08 PM

My suggestions (with approximate prices):

31" mud terrain tires (I'm partial to Goodyear MT/Rs), set of five: $900
budget boost (2" spring spacer kit): $100
ProComp front bumper: $100
RockHard rocker guards with tubing: $275
bikini + duster cover: $125

For your $1500, you'll end up with a tougher look and more capability, and you will not have negatively impacted your fuel economy. It's a win-win. Here's what you'll look like:

get some Truck Nutz. That'll do it for sure.

Bulls Balls®Big Boy Nuts™Truck Nuts™Your Nutz™ Truck Balls™

........or better yet, focus on the mechanical components that can make your Jeep function better on road and off.

kramerj12 05-09-2012 01:29 PM

that looks good but my only proublem is I need a full soft top because my back seat is used a lot. dose anyone know a good frameless soft top that isn't too exspensive?

kramerj12 05-09-2012 01:33 PM

it runs like its brand new I have everything l want and need with the mechanical components.

buy tools to work on the Jeep. you can never have enough. or buy a Factory Service Manual...also indispensable.

kramerj12 05-09-2012 01:43 PM

are frameless tops easy to put up and down?

The first pic is a 2" budget boost... Shortly after I put on a 2.5" OME lift but that's a pricey upgrade.

The tires are BFG MTs... They quit making them when the KM2s came out.

You could try Treadwrite.com

I know this sounds picky, but if the tops down and the doors are off -

Pull the door surrounds.

It will look a lot better.

I just finished my first pass at upgrades. I'll do more next year when the budget allows.

Removed bumper end caps
Black bezels around headlights
Removed running boards
Duratrac 31" tires
Procomp wheels
Fire extinguishers
New floormats (the nice thick rubber ones)
...no lift (this year)

Very pleased, far more aggressive than when I started.

Now that everyone has posted options, I will post the one that you probably do not want to hear.

PAY OFF THE JEEP (if it still has).

After HS and into college and you dont have a car payment, thats more money in the long run for more/better mods or hell spend it on your girl (if you are a dude).

HD Wrangler 05-09-2012 07:05 PM

Buy a couple cans of plastidip. Anything painted flat black looks manley. And its cheap.

sporty95f150 05-09-2012 07:12 PM

I really think tires are what make jeeps look agressive.
I like the duratracs and it transformed my jeep's appearance after I got them
I would also buy some tools, some very basic ones can keep you from having to call a tow truck
so basically:
tires-700ish (wait for someone to sell them used and get an even better deal)
2inch BB- 75-100
Warn winch-500-700
Tools-???
its similar to my setup.I didnt get my winch until the other day so its not in this pic

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...p/DSC01963.jpg

also if your more worried about performance I would buy a lunchbox locker, I bought one for the D30 and its like night and day

^^ looks like your rubbing? How bad is it? are those 31's on stock? I want 31's but I must run with the swaybars disconnected offroad it feels so much better. Don't wanna ruin the flares though. To the OP you can get some cheap nice looking bumpers. those are a good start. If you offroad skid plates are also a good start but people can't see it. at least you won't die on the trial

michaelbrandonw 05-09-2012 11:33 PM

2 Attachment(s)
x10 on the Duratracs. They look mean. I actually found a pair of 5 rubi wheels and tires almost brand new (they are EVERYWHERE) and run a little less than 31" for $525. Our 4 bangers struggle with anything bigger. Nates (what i have) has great front and rear bumpers for good prices especially if you buy both. The side rock guards are smitty which I found off CL for $175. I think the windshield lights look great, and cost $68 total for mounts and lights. Bedlining also freshens things up a bit as well. And the side marker grills where $33.
