Keep the Jeep or sell it????

My apologies for the long post.

I have an 87 yj. when i bought it, it had the 4.2, and 5 speed trans (ba-10). The original motor blew so i swapped in a 4.0 from 95 xj. 3 or 4 days after this swap, the motor threw a rod. Now it has a 4.0 from a 92 xj. my trans is leaking from between the trans and tcase. the slave cylinder is also leaking, this has been replaced three times already. i have a buddy with 95 or 96 xj that he is parting out. he has the ax-15 trans with external slave, the tcase with sye already installed, and a front driveshaft that i can buy off of him. i already have a 4 inch rough country suspension lift that i plan on putting on the jeep if i keep it and running 33 inch tires (id need to buy rims and tires still). i dont do much wheeling and the little bit that i do, is just small trails.

Now my mom wants me to sell the jeep and save for the rest of the summer and buy something else. shes not a fan of me not having airbags. My parents just want me to have something reliable and so far this jeep hasnt been on their good side. does everyone else think that i should just sell it or fix whats wrong and keep it. Thanks

Sell, save up, and pick up a TJ if you want airbags. I personally would keep the YJ and fix it up. Sounds like you have a line on some good replacement parts and 4" with 33s would look great. Probably would end up spending the same either way.

Why do the motors keep going bad?

The jeep is 15 years old. So you are going to replace some parts, that's just how it goes. I think the jeep is an awesome vehicle, as long as you research your jeep and stay on top of things it's not hard to maintain. Get a tj if your wanting airbags. But never leave the jeep family!:)

with an SYE you will need a different rear driveshaft, not the front.

sounds like you have a tendency to drive your jeep like a sportscar, hence the ruining of 2 motors in a short period of time. maybe you should sell it and buy a decent SUV ? NAH, keep it and fix it up. you already got parts and know how. JEEP stands for Just Empty Every Pocket...lol.

and by the way springsblueyj, do your math again, its 25 yrs old not 15. i know, i own an 87...lol.

i put the ax15 in mine and i must say that its a world of difference from the stock ba-10. smoother shifting, much quieter, definately a plus for that swap.

i actually drive the jeep to get the best fuel mileage i can, far from driving it like a sports car. the original 4.2l went while crossing a set of train tracks, i slowed down to 5mph over the posted speed limit and i guess that was still to fast. the track was a bit bumpy and after crossing, the motor was making a terrible clicking and grinding noise and it just got worse as i limped it home. the second motor which was the 4.0 that threw a rod. this happened while pulling out up to a traffic light at my school. i was only going about 10 or 12 mph. the weird part about this was i had just driven 250 miles on the highway to school only 2 days prior and got 22mpg for the trip. the motor seemed to be running smooth but apparently not.
