Stock Rear End Question
 
Ok, so at 10 o'clock at night Im laying under my jeep in the snow trying to look for my gear ratio. The previous owner replaced the stock diff cover with a chrome one.:doh: There is no tag from what I can see. I have a 97 sport with the Dana 44 and the trac-loc rear. I am trying to order a detroit locker should I order the 3.73 and lower or 3.93 and higher. I will be reusing the same ring and pinion. Also is it normal to have about 6 inches of ground clearence to the gas tank of are my springs that sagged. :crash:

Jack up the back, put a chalk mark on the inside of the tire, another chalk mark on the yoke, turn the tire once and count how many times the yoke turns. If it turns 4x's you have 4:10's if it turns less then 4 times you have a 3:something.
The only for sure positive yes I have it way is pull the cover and count the teeth. He might have replaced the cover when he had it regeared :D :D :D

I believe the only gears available in a '97 TJ with a D44 are 3.55's.

^ might not be stock gears though.

SB, was the jeep completely stock when u got it? (tire size)

Depends on your tires and lift, I know I have WAY more clearance than that. I will measure tomorrow, then subtract the xtra height of my lift and tires.

I have 31 inch tires on there right now, but no lift. I know that my springs are sagging on the left side by more than an inch and a quarter than the rightside in the rear. I do believe the jeep is stock though. Besides the horrible amount of chrome all over the place. No Engine mods, no lift etc. I belive I would want to order the detroit locker that is 3.73 and numerically lower right. What jeeps had the 4.10's back in 97.

but yes you probably have the 3.73 if you have a manual and a 3.07 if you have the auto

4:10's were an option on ANY jeep in 97 and 98 when I bought mine.

What is the differance when ordering a locker btw the 3.73 and numerically lower and 3.90 and higher? Is it the size of the carrier?

Only with the 2.5L, not with the 4.0L. With the 5-speed transmission and the 4.0L engine in '97, you only had a choice of 3.07 or 3.55. In '98 it became 3.07 or 3.73. No jive, no rumor, no kidding. :)

It is the thickness of the location on the carrier that the ring gear bolts to. Lower ratio gears like 4.56 and 4.88 have smaller diameter pinion gears so the ring gear must be positioned closer to the pinion gear so they can mesh properly. Carriers made for low ratios have that thicker mounting area for the ring gear. Sometimes you can find a specially made ring gear that is made thicker that can be used in place of a different carrier. :)

Hmmm, pages 3-33 and 3-61 in the 97 FSM supplement show all 5 gear ratios on the 97's 181FBI and 181RBI axles up to 4:10, the 216RBI [D44] 3:07/3:55/4:10 on page 3-100. Same in the 98 XJ's FSM with 3:07, 3:55 and 4:10 in the 8.25. Our 97ZJ has 3:73's in it's dana35, those I just replaced two weeks ago as well as adding a locker to it. I also have a complete set of 4:10 factory gears sitting on the shelf for the D30 and 8.25 that I pulled from a 99 XJ with a 4.0 five or six years ago, just never go round to putting them in.

i wasn't saying every 4cyl has 4.10's. i was saying that the only jeeps that came with 4.10's are 4cyl (not all) and rubis

Regardless of what the FSM says, which is usable world-wide since export models will be built slightly differently, I stand by what I said on the axle ratios for U.S. Wrangler TJ models as the OP has. :)
