Power Line Trails in CT??

OK, I had to ask! There are some sweet looking trails in SE CT that have been cleared and look ALL too inviting..

What's the rule??

Sueby 05-17-2012 12:23 PM

As far as I know all the power lines are not legal to wheel CT and most are now gated. CT sucks.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw those. Looked like a Jeep Commercial or a video game. The are now signs all over them. Guessing someone tried them out.

a friend told me that the power line trails at nepaug forest are fun but you can get a ticket for going on them..i am going to try it friday to see how the overall area is. I am new to jeeps and am apprehensive about going out without a winch but what the hell???

Never had a problem at nepaug, as long as we stayed out of the water. Never needed a winch there as far as I could remember. You just need to pick your lines and avoid some of the big stuff (there is usually a trail around it).

garym11901 06-01-2012 06:58 PM

went out there today..it was a good time, not overly challenging but i am new to this so it was good to get my feet wet.. i would go again maybe venture off the beaten path a bit.

I haven't been there in a year or two, but I don't think we ever stayed on the beaten path...

Whaussler 06-02-2012 06:31 AM

I was trying to find this place but couldn't. Can u tell me how to get there?.

garym11901 06-02-2012 07:22 AM

Nepaug forest

There are a couple ways to get in there the first one is on rt 44 on the canton new hartford town line on Satan's kingdom rd, i have been told that road is prone to flooding. The way i went in is on rt 202 also on the canton new hartford town line,it is a little trickier, if you are heading west on rt 202 after you cross into new hartford you will see the high tension power lines cross the rd. right before the lines on the north side of the rd there is a dirt rd marked by a tiny sign that says Nepaug state forest, if you hit Steele rd in new hartford you went too far, turn around go back about a 1/10 of a mile. there is a third way in from ramp rd in canton, go all the way down ramp rd, go past the town dump and right in to the forest. If anyone can explain it better please do as i have only been there once and it took me forever to find these entrances.

Whaussler 06-02-2012 02:57 PM

Awesome. Thanks for the directions. I'll be sure to try them soon.

crazymike 07-10-2012 09:47 AM

I wheel in the higganum power lines nothing to really worry about up there. I have also run into the DEP there too, just bring a garbage bag and pick up garbage when you stop they will love you for it.

garym11901 07-10-2012 07:52 PM

How do I find this place? Is this the kind of place a lift is required for or can a stocker like mine have some fun

garym11901 07-10-2012 07:57 PM

So I was on the highway today and this white jeep with a nasty front end complete with winch and stinger on the front was behind me. As it rolled past me it had cl&p logos on the side. Does anybody know if these are cl&p employes or contractors, and does anybody know why they need these vehicles. I assume they cruise the power line trails for maintenance but I've never seen or heard of them using jeeps.

crazymike 07-11-2012 08:00 AM

They work for CL&P, also the trials i hit need minimum of 33s. I took a stock jeep back there but didnt get far.

jaresco91 07-11-2012 09:52 AM

No kidding. I bet that's why they took their sweet time bringing my power back last October- Gave themselves more time to play

TKorona 07-12-2012 07:37 PM

The power lines in Waterford are accessible but not legal. Over a year late to this thread but I just joined the forum... I live very close to those power lines in Waterford and you can access them from a couple of places, not legally, but you can get there... I used to ride them on my dirt bike.. There is a trail right off of Cross RD just passed BJ's heading towards 85 that leads right into them. Also, if you go passed the Super Wal-Mart and Lowes on the service road all the way to the end there is a trail entrance there also.

I haven't been on them in my JKR yet so I don't remember if the trail entrance by Wal Mart is vehicle friendly or not.... The one by BJ's is and I have seen vehicles back there before.. Once again, totally not legal....

jaresco91 04-14-2013 11:09 AM

Let's all make a trip out to some power lines soon!

CTFF 04-14-2013 11:30 PM

I used to wheel the Tyl Middle School / Fire Street power line trails in Montville. It's been quite a while since I have been up there though.
