First I had to remove the outer headlight rings, these are held in place by 3 T-15 torques head screws. (Green arrows)

Then I had to remove the head light retaining rings, these are held in place by 4 T-15 torques head screws. (Orange arrows)

Pay close attention to the slots that the Yellow arros are pointing to.

These tabs, (red arrows) need to line up with the slots the yellow arrows were pointing to.

I decided it would be easier to install the HID bulbs while the housings were outside of the Jeep.

There are 3 tabs on the light bulb that line up with 3 slots on the housing. They can only go in one way so just spin the bulb until they all line up. Then there is a spring clip that holds the bulb firmly in place.

Each bulb comes with this warning sticker:

Installation is the reverse of removal, and here they are all buttoned up:

On to the wiring!

The main wiring harness, and one of the Ballasts:

I mounted the drivers side ballast right in front of the fuse block, and next to the air box, the passenger side I mounted slightly aft of the winshield washer fluid bottle.

Everything is plug an play with the exception of two grounds, (one for each ballast) and one hot wire.

Now that they're installed I still have to adjust them, and I'll chime back in after I've had them for a while and comment on how I like them compared to the factory sealed beam lights, and if I have any problems or failures.

Looks very nice! Two questions?

Did you get the 35w or 55w kit from DDM? And what color did you get? Looks like the 5000k but I cant tell.

I got the 55w Raptor full size ballast kit with 5000k bulbs, nice guess! :punk:

Have you needed to adjust the aim? Or are your neighbors at the end of the street going to hate that you can see in their windows now? :D

I haven't adjusted them yet, but I will be moving the beam downwards and to the passenger side to hopefully prevent blinding other drivers on the road.

Duramaxxed 05-20-2012 11:00 AM

Holy Glare!!

If the Shields are Removable on those Bulbs, do yourself and all Oncoming Drivers a Favor...Remove the Shields, Paint them with Flat Black High Heat Paint, let them Fully Dry, and Re-Install.

Duramaxxed 05-20-2012 11:06 AM

Here's what your Glare Looks like now...and what it'll Look like After.

Now:

After:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...0306-00038.jpg

See how much LESS Glare and Stray Light there is after Painting the Shield? The Above Pics are mine with 35w OE HID's, so yours with 55w "Kit" HID's is FAR Worse.

Thanks for the tip! :thumb:

Perfect! That is exactly what I was thinking of picking up. Thanks for the tip and the photos!:thumb:

Im on the DDM website, and i want to do this conversion. Im going to get the Hella ecode h4 conversion from quadratec. On DDM when im choosing, what do I pick? 55w, 5000k, but what type of bulb? I don't know for sure. I have a 99 wrangler. What do I pick for the HID Harness, error eliminator, adaptor cables, and mounting brackets? Thanks guys, I cant wait to do this upgrade!

I got the raptor kit, with 55w high beam/low beam bulbs in the 5000k spectrum. I ordered the mounting brackets, and I ordered the wiring harness but it turned out that I didn't need the wiring harness because the Raptor kit came with a harness that was even better than the one I ordered. The error eliminator isn't needed either.

I have 55w 6k. They are vey white and not blue

You want the H4 hi/lo. You do not need any adaptor cables or error eleminators

baerbonesjones 06-23-2012 10:37 AM

sick bro!!! im going to ge the same set after seing your set up, what did the whole set up cost?

Neil F. 06-23-2012 10:43 AM

Lenses and the DDM lights will be around 150 delivered

cconry21 08-22-2012 07:30 PM

Where did you order the hella ecodes from?

99georgiatj 08-22-2012 08:44 PM

Has anyone tried to put the h4 low beam kit in any KC long-range lights? That would be awesome to have my headlights and KC's both HID.

98wrang 08-22-2012 09:32 PM

So you have to order the hella e-codes seperate from the DDM tuning kit? I havent even order the things yet and im about to be broke for the 4 codes it threw....great

Neil F. 08-23-2012 05:50 AM

Yes. Quadratec has the best price. Type e-code in the search. You want the ECE lenses not the DOT Vision Plus

rediminsion 08-23-2012 10:45 AM

Putting hid's in free form housings is never a good idea. Remember that person driving opposite of you in the Honda Civic who had those obnoxious blue hid's? They nearly blinded you and you probably cursed at them! This is exactly what you will be doing to others now! IMHO if you are looking to upgrade your lighting situation, just get the E-codes and some nice white bulbs. This will gain you the greater lighting output that you are looking for as well as a nice looking set of lights.. My .02

Slightly over $200 bucks for everything, but I ordered the upgraded wire harness which it turns out I didn't need. So figure around $180-$185ish...

I ordered them from Quadratec, and they came with H4 bulbs as well, which I put in the glove box in case I need a spare.

Yes, I ordered the DDM tuning kit and the Hella kit from different places.

If adjusted correctly there's very little issues. Take a 70 lumen flash light and shine it off to the side of being directly into your eyes, then take a 200 lumen flash light and shine it off to the side of being directly into your eyes... neither one when shined to the side of being directly at you is much of a problem, but even the 70 lumen light will blind you if it's shined right into your retinas... the key is proper adjustment. The E-codes keep the beam nice and tight, so far I've only had 2 people flash me in the 3 months I've been running them.

Ive been running 55w 6k hid's in my old bimmer with proper projector housings for 2 years. Ive NEVER had anyone flash their lights at me.

Just because only 2 people have flashed their lights, doesnt mean that they are the only ones that you pissed off. They are just more vocal than the rest of the drivers who just curse you under their breath and move on!

Just because you've never had anyone flash you doesn't mean you never crossed paths with the two that flashed me... plus if you jacked up your Beemer and put it on 35's you'd prolly have a lot more valid arguement and experience to compare to my Jeep... I'm not saying that you're wrong, but I've yet to have someone swerve off the road and take out a bus load of Nuns/Orphans/puppies and bunny rabbits... just saying...

^ This is the key. I have the same setup and believe me, if they are not adjusted correctly, you WILL get flashed (and/or run off the road). But when adjusted right, they are not a problem. If you are worried about offending others, have someone you know drive past you in the dark and get their opinion as I did.

rediminsion 08-23-2012 10:18 PM

Well, at least have them adjusted properly! At this point I think all I can do is try to convince you to do that! I guess Im just a little old school, I prefer oem only upgrades. Of course there are plenty of other non-oem upgrades that look good too. To each their own, personally I would never install hid's in free form housings.

I did the proper adjustment (and aimed them a littler lower). I've had mine over 3 years and have never been flashed once.

povchrisw 08-24-2012 09:17 AM

ok iv gotta do this conversion.. thanks for the great write up and pics

user4574 08-24-2012 09:17 PM

I've been sitting on my kit for a while and just put it in a few days ago. Tonight was the first night I had a chance to try them out. Got a couple issues though.

How long should they be off before turning back on? I know it can be a few min at least, but I pulled off and filled up with gas, went to turn on and only one light would come up. Waited a few more min and still only same light coming on. Drove home, turned them off, and the one that wouldn't come on came on. Other light was off but expected since it had been just on.

Also noticed a flicker while driving. At first I thought it was just ride and I am getting used to brighter light, but when I got home I noticed on wall while not moving (the light that I drove home with) that it would "jump". Did not chance with rpm either.

Possible cheap/defective ballasts? Or do I need to troubleshoot deeper? Wired following the OP example so it's near identical, but it is a different (not DDM) kit.
