chassis saver tips & tricks?
Hi, my son & I started painting the chasis of his 95 YJ w/ chassis saver yesterday. We did not have what I would call good results. We bought a quart of the high build jet black & applied it via brush after thourough degreasing & light scaliy rust removal. First off I noticed the product to be very thick but thought it may just be the nature of the product. We also found it to have a very short pot life (approx 20 min) before it started setting. The resultant finish had several sags, drips, & what appeared to be several tiny air bubbles entrained in the surface.
Is this all normal with this product? I've read where others have stated they found it to be thin & flowed out very well. This is not the case w/ us!
I can say that the morning we started was rather warm (mid 80's), don't know actual humidity but were in SC so its always humid!
Does this sound like we may have gotten an old can that was past its shelf life, or were the heat & humidity the culprit for or poor results?
Any insight or experinces would be mist appreciated!

I'm not a restoration expert, thou I do try to keep the jeep looking rust free.. with all kinds of products.. and it sounds like the can you got was a bit out dated.. these kinds of products are really hard to get without any sort of date code and I'm sure most of these types of products do have a shelf life.

I know of a friend in NC who totally restored a 55 Chevy, and I watched him restore more then a few parts. taking the time to acid dip parts (frame included) then drip the frame in rust prevention products.. Mind you this was several years ago and I wasn't aware of this process until it was actually done.

As a side not to this topic.. I've just started using Krylons rust protection spray paint (primer) and I'm really surprised at how well its working.. thou it was just a temp spray.. I think I need to allot for time to actually take the tires off so I can really get in to some of those tight spaces.. then I'll prob use a gloss black Krylon paint once again as the final coat.

Thanks for the reply. I've e-mailed Magnet Paints to see if they can provide any guidance. I can see us possibly having purchased an old can, I wouldn't expect the store we got it from to sell a whole lot of this product and it probably sat on their shelf for a while.
Will update when/if I hear back from them.

I had the same problem with mine, sanded it all down and started over. I have used pretty much all the products out there and I keep going back to POR15.
