Little Moab (or Mini Moab)--what it is, how to find it
As they say, it is easy to find once you know where it is. ;) Let me help you find it. First, you need to go to Redwood Road on the west side of the lake. There are many dirt roads which head off into the hills; the trick is to know exactly which road leads to LM. Finding the right one is easy if you watch the mile markers along the road. On the map below, the red square is at mile marker 7:
Just barely north of mile marker 7 is a dirt road. That is the one you want. Google Maps labels this road 9600 South, though you'll see no street sign when you're on it. Here is a closer satellite image; mile marker 7 is again designated by a red square (Redwood Road is yellow):
Anyway, head due west. There are a number of smaller dirt trails that break off this "main" gravel road, so don't turn off too early. As you can see in the above picture, you'll encounter one left hand curve, and later a second left hand curve. Just as you exit this second left curve, you'll see a small "parking lot" open dirt area on your right. It is across from the green box in this picture:
Turn off the main gravel road here. At this point, you'll be able to see LM in the distance; it's the hill with almost no trees/shrubs on it. Now just use the smaller trails and make your way there.
To whet your appetite, here I am last fall at the lesser of the two big "breakover" points, showing a couple feet of air under my right rear:
Here are some photos of my friend Ralph back in 2005:
And here is my friend Mark, nearly turning turtle:
And if you're really up for a challenge, you can head out there when it's covered in snow and ice. This was December 2010:
It's a fun playground.
If you enjoy mudding, wait for it to rain and go play in the holes that are all over the place. This is a really nice and fun day-trip venue
