tuffy overhead console for 03-06?

So I was gonna mount this tuffy console in my jeep for my CB and Band scanner but I went to buy it and it says that it Will not fit TJ Wrangler 2003-05, due to the roll bar padding changes. has anyone tried to fit this on an 03-05 wrangler? the only thing i cam thinking is that the padding is thicker...in which case I can just trim down or go buy longer/wider U-clamps....can somebody enlighten me on this sitiuation? i'd hate to spend $250 and have it not fit!!

Yours has thicker padding, last pic I saw of the 03-06 it has some shaped padding attached to the roll bar, then the cover over it. 97-02 has padding like foam pipe insulation with the cover over it. You could always get someone with the older padding to swap with you or just remove it all-together.

from 2003 on there is extra "head protection" foam under he roll bar paddings.

That is not the only change your going to have to deal with.

#1 would be the plastic surrounding the windshield was not there in the earlier years. So that will have to be trimmed away.

#2 would be that in the earlier year TJ's the footman loop was held in with torx bolts. You simply had to unscrew them to mount the tuffy. Now they are pop riveted in. This means your going to have to drill those out as well as make new threads to mount the tuffy.

#3 would be the thicker roll bar padding. It's not just a matter of getting longer u bolts to mount to it. The slots and bolts in the console don't have enough adjustment to overcome the shortened space. So you actually need to remove some of the padding to make it fit.

None of these things are impossible to overcome with some time and work. But at the same time its not just a matter of getting some longer bolts. I would hate to see you spend your money on something you thought was going to be a ten minute fix.

I saw a write up someplace once on how to do this a long time ago. I will see if i can find it again.

Hey was checking this question out and I found some information on the situation,

"This is just a reminder that the Tuffy part #048 Dual Overhead Console will not fit in the 2003-2005 TJ Wranglers. Starting in 2003, Jeep moved the roll bar forward in the cab approximately two inches and enlarged the diameter of the top of the bar. This made the #048 console too large to fit between the roll bar and the windshield frame."

now THIS will be a LOT harder to overcome...plus i've since mounted switches in the center of the windshield at the top in the plastic trim....alright just thought i'd update anyone that was thinking of doing this!
