NP231 Drain plug issue
 
So I went to change out the fluids today - F&R diffs, trans, and transfer case. All went well until I got to the drain plug on the transfer case. I got the fill plug loose first but the drain plug started to strip :eek: . I sprayed it with PB Blaster hoping that will work. If not, is it OK to put some heat to it? I'm hoping I can still get a bite of it and ease it out if I can loosen it up.

This is BY FAR the most useful tool I have EVERY owned for my jeep. I cannot stress how many times this thing has saved my life. Every bolt I encounter (even the track bar bolts) I've hit 2 or 3 times with this thing and was able to get them off. I encourage everyone to get one of these.

Weld a bolt to it - Many times I've welded or had someone weld another bolt to it and now you have another bolt to round off.



Extractor set - more difficult, but I've done it many times. Start by drilling a pilot hole with a small bit in the head of the bolt just a few 16ths deep. Then step it up to a manageable size you thing think the extractor can handle (torque)

While I don't think much heat will hurt, I don't recommend it, That fluid starts to break down a certain temps but if your changing prolly doesn't matter. I would be concerned about fire. But I have be known to weld or take a propane pen torch to those buggers in a fit of rage and not caring.

Ran into this issue the other day will my fill plug. Hit it with PB Blaster, used a hammer to seat the bit in as good as possible, and used an impact wrench. Fortunately it broke free. I was going to try the next biggest size bit and hammer it in if that didn't work. My next option then would have been a sharp chisel and a hammer. Hit the plug in a counter-clockwise direction with the chisel and hammer. Chisel should bite and help loosen the plug with enough good whacks. Failing that, I'd try an extractor tool. If you've got a welder, you could always do what Vinman did and weld a nut/bolt to it. Good luck!

Thanks for the input guys! I ordered a new plug from the dealer ($1.25) and I'm hoping I can get it out w/o any welding. Unfortunately the Homeowners Association frowns upon me even doing my own oil changes let alone welding in the driveway (not to mention I don't own a welder yet...). I'm gonna hit it with the PB Blaster again and see if Sears has the impact driver. I'll keep ya posted.

Same deal with my HOA. Have to do most of my wrenching in the garage. If you have a Harbor Freight in town, pick this up. Hands down one of the best purchases I've made. I've got numerous airtools, and this electric impact wrench is my go to. I'd normaly say you get what you pay for, but this thing is a beast. And for about $40 it's a steal (use the 20% off coupon).

So I finally got the plug out this weekend. I hit it with PB Blaster a few times over the past couple weeks and picked up that impact driver from Sears. Realized as I was getting started it's a 1/2" drive and my hex socket is 3/8". Ugh. So I just set it in with a few taps of the 3# Estwing and eased it out. A new drain plug and some fresh MaxATF and she's good to go. Thanks for the help!
