Manual shift problems.

Help. My 97 TJ Wrangler 2.5 with manual shift is not going into reverse.
If I turn off the engine it is easy to shift into reverse.
But sometime (when I am lucky) I can get it in reverse when the engine still is running. ( sorry for bad english)

With the engine running, does it take a long time to get it in reverse? Does it grind?
Reverse gears don't have synchronizers, so if the clutch master/slave cylinders aren't working as well as they used to you can get some grinding.
