Rear diff crunching sound.
 
Have an 04 jeep tj with a 4 inch suspension lift and factory diff. If I drive for a period of time and when I turn a corner ( or reverse ) it really protests against the turn and makes an awful grinding/crunchy sound. The bf thinks it may be the clutch. But Iv been out side of the jeep while he has reverse parked and the sounds is 100% coming from the rear end. Has any one had this problem?

I did in my 06. It only had about 20,000 miles on it. Turned out it was the rear end lube. I put in Valvoline for a LSD & fixed the problem. Its got almost 42,000 on it now & hasn't made another sound.

Ya I'm getting pretty close to that mileage right now. I'll have to try that I hope it will fix it. Is it a cheap fix?

I don't remember how much the rear end lube was but dont forget the rtv silicone to make a new diff cover seal. All together shouldn't cost more than about $20.

Ha that's peanuts compared to replacing the whole rear axel I really hope it fixes my problem. I have a sticker on it that says don't worry that noise is normal. Just because of that lol

There's also chance that your gears are missing some teeth. With is about a 1000$ fix. That would actually be more probable. Hopefully some others will tell you what to look for. Though when you pop the cover. It should be rather obvious.

Cost me $700 not counting taking it to three mechanics before it was correctly diagnosed. The first two wanted to replace my tranny without even pulling the diff cover even though I told them where the problem was. I had to drive around in FWD for two weeks before I could get it fixed. I believe the problem started when I broke both rear upper control arms allowing the rear axle to pivot. I don't know how long I drove like that before I noticed it. The gears didn't fail for another year or so.

The gears shouldn't be to bad for me to do. I'm lucky enough to have a mechanically inclined friend who does all my work for free I will just have to track down a set of gears if that's my problem. He also was wondering could it be the slip limiter? He wasn't sure if I had diff like that and told me to go and ask the dealership but if u guys might no it will save me the hassle of going there

Either way it would still be in the diff. I hope he is very mechanically inclined gear installation is an exact science. If you don't get it perfect it all goes to sh!t again.

Before you do anything just pull the diff cover, clean out all the fluid with some brake cleaner, silicone for new gasket, and refill.


I had a similar issue once. Ended up the diff was leaking and the fluid was a little too low.

You might only be missing one or two teeth and if you can get them out of the carrier so they stop banging and grinding on everything you might be able to get away with just that. For a little while.

No problem. Start a thread on pulling the diff cover and how to RTV and refill it. If you would like to do it yourself. Itd be an easy and free self diagnosis.

I've been having this same problem since I got the my tj in october. The guy I bought it from said it was normal, but I've been thinking that it can't be :facepalm:
And everyone is always asking me what the noise is, and I had no idea what to tell them lol.

What is RTV? silicone sorry, should have read more
I'm thinking I'll try pulling apart the differential to take a look.

Silicone is a rubber gasket maker that bonds metal to metal.

Put the Jeep on jacks. Pull the diff cover off. With wheels off the ground and a flashlight have someone spin the tires and looks for chipped or broken gears or loud unusual noise and make sure it feels smooth

If you catch it early enough it will save you in the long run. Mine started with a messed up spider gear which ended up destroying everything. Ring gear, pinion and the entire carrier. New ARB carrier and the rest ran me 1500 bucks. And as someone stated earlier do not attempt to install a new rear end on your own unless your a mechanical genius with the right tools

my 99 started making noise on my way home from work got home popped the d35 cover off and there was 4 teeth missing off the pinion gear lol

I most def will. Gunna pull the diff cover off this week and clean it up an inspect it and do the easiest one first.

Looking for broken teeth is one thing, but look closer for metal filings as well. They won't necessarily be the source of your noise, but would be an indicator of something wearing abnormally. Could be cheaper to fix now than later.

Haha I have a sticker for mine that says don't worry that noise is normal, last year it made some pretty fancy sounds I replaced ball joints u-joints hub bearings both rear shocks and fixed a big dirty exhaust leak, so all those fun ones stopped now its just the rear diff so when it starts ( after driving for 45 mins. ( also wanted to add it doesn't make the crunchy sound all the time only when Iv been driving for about 45 min and it's hot, if I let it sit for an hour to cool off it doesn't make the sound any more ) I just turn the music up loud and sing as loud as possible lol

Haha nice!

I havent really figured out Exactly when mine does it...I think it actually might be all the time, hot or cold. But its mainly when I'm turning the wheels and moving forward or in reverse slowly. I'll hear the loud crunching almost like a popping. Its terrible because it mainly happens in driveways so when I'm at someones house they think my jeep is falling apart :whistling:

So I might take the diff. cover off in an hour or two, if not, then tomorrow.
I'll post my results too.

That sounds like spider gears to me. Pop the cover and take a look. If you ignore it you may be getting a regear sooner than you wanted.

Well I just finished taking it apart and putting it back together.
Everything looked fine except the oil lol.
Filling it up with new oil was a PITA though!! the angle of the fill plug is annoying.

Time will tell if I still hear the noise.

Did you look for bits or pieces of metal in the oil??? And you should just fill it til it pours back out the fill plug then cap it ASAP

Yea I looked for pieces of metal(I poured the oil from one container to another a few times) and also looked for filings/shavings when I wiped the gears. I didnt see anything out of the ordinary.
The fill hole is just straight on so I couldnt tilt the bottle of oil downwards. I had it straight on and had to squeeze the bottle and practically shoot the oil into it lol. Having a clear hose would have made it easier. Now Ill know that for the future though.
