Belt snapped after squealing

Help :surrender:. I'm a newbie and have been browsing this forum a lot these last days.

Last week, I started my Jeep TJ 1997 2.5L for the irst time in a month and was greeted by a deafening squeal.

I decided to wait a bit to see if the noise will go softer but it didn't. I tried pushing on the gas and moving the car.
Anyhow, the noise kep going and then the serpentine belt broke and there was a lot of smoke and burning smell.

I found on one of the threads on this forum that I should be able to turn all the pulleys by hand, which I tried but the alternator one wouldn't budge.

Can it be the problem?

I noticed also that my coolant box was completely empty but no trace of any on the floor !!

What should I do and test before changing any pieces?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like you found it.

Alternator should spin with very little effort.

Power steering pump and A/C compressor...a little more effort.

Flywheel....not gonna turn by hand.

I don't have an A/C compressor.

I called some recycling places and they have a functioning alternator, I'll get it this weekend and try to replace it along with the belt.

Thanks for the fast reply.

Mine did the same thing. It was the AC compressor. I just got a smaller belt and rerouted around it for a while untill I fixed my AC. Sounds like your alternator though, good luck!

I'll test it this weekend and hopefully, it's only the alternator.

Thanks

Same here. Still haven't fixed the ac. That's why the top and doors come off.

:punk:

Hi, I need help once more.

I got the alternator and installed without a problem.
To install the serpentine belt, I loosened the screw on the tensioner pulley, but couldn't loosen the big screw that moves the pulley closer of further to the belt.

After forcing on it, the screw cut in half !!! :-(

I attached pictures of the screw before and after.

Anybody has an idea on what to do next !?!

Thanks

Thanks everybody for your help.

I was able to install the alternator and the serpentine belt without replacing that screw.

Anyhow, I am having a problem with the engine cranking but not starting.
I created a new thread for the new problem here.
