2012 Wrangler softtop making wind noise.. NEW FROM DEALER

2012 Wrangler softtop making wind noise.. NEW FROM DEALER... I just picked up my new 2012 Wrangler from the dealer on sat and if I drive over 50MPH I get a wind noise on the drivers side of my jeep.. I want back to the dealer and he said the back panel was not closed good. he closed it and I want home, once I got on the parkway again all the noise of the wind started again and its ONLY on the drives side.

Expect to hear some noise when riding with a softtop... new Jeep or older one. If you want a ride that is a bit more quiet go with the hardtop. I'd check around the softtop and make sure everything is sealed properly. Maybe even take the top down and put it back on step-by-step.

thanks I did take it down two times and put it back up but the noise is ONLY on the drive side and that is was why I was thinking that something is up... I dont care about the noise if it was wind out side but it sounds like its only on drive side

Wish I could tell you what it was SJS. I'm pretty sure I have seen a similiar post/thread about softtop noise coming from one side of the Jeep on this forum before. Try searching around some more. Good luck!

start covering off all the seals with some masking tape. you'll find it. mine had a poorly sealed windshield. at 40+ there was a lot of wind noise from the drivers side lower corner. I narrowed it down it tape. They replaced the screen and it's gone.

SJS 06-18-2012 12:29 PM

whats the screen?

Blastek 06-18-2012 01:16 PM

windshield

SJS 06-18-2012 01:21 PM

it was coming from the glass?

Blastek 06-18-2012 01:37 PM

yeah, wind can also come from the door seals. the wind can enter from one area and exit from another, which kind of makes it difficult to diagnose. that's why taping up and test driving can narrow it down

Also, setting the air to fresh and cranking up the fan speed inflates the top slightly. This makes the top, when on the highway, much quieter.

Or turn your music up louder... ;?)-)

Also, are you sure it's wind noise? I test drove a 2010 before I purchased a new 2012 and I thought it was wind noise coming from the drivers side (with a hard top). Turned out it wasn't wind noise at all, but coming from the engine compartment. It too was also only on the drivers side. I don't know what it was (belt, or something else entirely), but turned me away from the 2010.

Not saying yours isn't wind noise...just something else to consider entirely.

Good luck to you.

Check this seal isn't bulging out

This is from a Supertop NX but its pretty much the same as the factory soft top. If you look the back half of the seal on the driver side is poking up. If yours is like that then you want to push it down with your finger. Then it should all look like the half on the passenger side. It will stop the whistle at about 30 mph.

SJS 06-19-2012 08:59 AM

Check out where the soft top (header) is meeting the silver metal windshield frame. In the lower part on the picture the crack between the 2 is how it should look. On the upper half (driver side) there is some of the rubber seal (attached to the windshield frame) poking out. You can push/tuck that seal down with you finger then run it along the crack. It will slip in very easy like a zip lock after you get it started. When your done the windshield bulge should be hidden.
