Upper Control Arms or MML/BL
 
I have a 2005 LJ with a 3.5" Rock Krawler suspension on 33" tires. I have a slight vibe at start and after leveling off at 45 MPH. I have a little money to spend and was wondering what would be more beneficial to eliminate vibes upper adjustable control arms or a mml/bl? I don't have the extra money to buy the SYE/CV shaft at this time, but would like to get them someday.

Both are beneficial, and if they are both in your long term build plans then get whatever you think will fix your vibes for now. It will pretty much be a crap shoot as to which may fix your vibes since what you're trying to do either way is a band-aid fix until you actually get an SYE. If it was me, I'd probably do the MML.

But I'd recommend saving for the SYE and CV shaft as soon as possible. I'm personally not a fan of fixing problems like these with a band-aid. It rarely ends well.

I agree. I would get the control arms and keep saving for the sye. You need the arms for that anyways. So it seems like a more productive use for your money to buy them.

the upper adjustable control arms aren't going to do much good without the SYE. the pinion angle alignment requirements are different between your current single cardan shaft, and the double cardan shaft after an SYE. Do the SYE/DC shaft now or drop the t-case.

In fact, I just so happen to have a 1" t-case drop homemade out of 6061-T6 solid aluminum stock, and the appropriate metric bolts, I'd be willing to sell. PM me if interested.

I would do the SYE it was a pain in the ass for me but got it sorted out and i have no issues also eyeballed the pinion angle and got it on my first shot. If you go UCA get the Savvy/Al ones. if you want i'll send you my transfer case drop kit that came with my lift as i did not use it. just pay shipping.

I had a 1" t-case drop in before. All it did was give me a vibe at about 15 mph instead of take off. Sounds like I should do UCA first, install them and then save for SYE/CV?

A TC drop can be a variety of sizes, the one the po installed on my TJ was too big, which made the vibes worse. You can play around with how much it drops and find the right amount, cheap and easy :)

I would mml for $130 and see how you go, get the control arms ($200ish? The currie ones I ordered were 240) when you buy your sye

i don't know your budget but adams driveshafts has a good kit and great CS

there has been issues with the tail housing output seal but i replaced it before putting mine on

If it's me, I'd do the MML lift now and do the UCA, SYE/DC shaft at the same time. At 3.5" of lift and the longer driveshaft in the LJ, I'd be very surprised it a MML coupled with a T-Case drop wasn't enough to eliminate the vibes. Of course, each Jeep is different so it's a crap shoot.

There should be no harm in installing the control arms before the SYE as long as everything is the same length. But then, what's the point - especially if that money could be spent on something else that might actually solve your issue?

I didn't think so. It sounded otherwise... I would get them now and get them out of the way. For me at least, I don't have all the time in the world. So I do things when time allows.

It sounded the way it did because not everyone understands that adjustable control arms alone do not fix vibration problems, just as only installing an SYE and CV shaft doesn't fix vibrations. Everything is needed.

Most can't afford everything at once, so you either save up and buy everything together or buy in pieces. It really doesn't matter which way you choose, just understand what you're buying and why.

No, it's not required to do both. However, doing both does make things a bit easier since less modifications will be required compared to just doing a MML or BL by itself. They are also both useful for the future in case you decide to do a tummy tuck or similar mod.

I know that. Unlimited just stated that the should be done together when the op asked if he could do the UCA first then the rest. I was wondering if there was a specific reason or just because the control arms wouldn't fix vibes without the rest.

If you want to place your axle correctly in the wheel well, you'll eventually need all 8 adjustable control arms. The myth that only rear uppers are needed is just that, a myth. While you can usually adjust them enough to fix your pinion angle, you're rarely able to place the axle in the correct location with just one set of control arms.

But like I said, if a tummy tuck is in your future, both the MML and BL will be beneficial.

Edit: For clarification, all 8 aren't absolutely required at first, although they are definitely desirable. If you can't afford all 8 at once, personally I'd start out with rear upper and lower arms so that you can properly align your axle after installing your SYE and CV shaft. But once you get to the point of installing a tummy tuck, you'll definitely want all 8.

Thanks for all the replies I really appreciate it. I have the lower adjustables already on as part of the lift. Guess I'll wait on the adjustable UCA and SYE/CV until I can purchase and install them at the same time.
