Will Rod bearings do the trick?
hello Jeepers,

I have a 2000 jeep wrangler sahara..4.0 liter
I am getting a knock in the engine.. was wondering if it could be piston slap due to a worn rod bearing. it seems to be coming from one of the back pistons. it has lost oil preassure but no smoke..makes me think bearing and not rings

I plan to pull the oil pan in a few moments to see if i can find the one with the wear.

i also plan to do a total rebuild but the timming the jeep is my only means of transportation right now..i want a quick fix just to get me by til i can do the complete rebuild

questions i have:
will i be able to visually see the wear..or do i need to use a feeler gauge?
is it possible to remove a piston and rod from the bottom of engine with crank still in? i didnt want to remove the head at this point.

Ok Exhaust pipes are a problem to get off...ugh

You can't get the piston and rods out the bottom. You could replace the rod bearings but I wouldn't do that without replacing the main bearings and cam bearings. I don't know the exact symptoms but it could also be a wrist pin making the noise. You are going to have to take the head off to get the pistons out. You more than likely won't be able to see any wear. You will have to plastigauge the bearings or mike them.

thanks Div4gold...i understand replacing the mains and cam bearings..i was just wanting to put a band aid on the main problem right now..i also thought it could be a wrist pin.

i dont have another means of transportation right now..was looking for the quick fix

I would pull the engine and tear it down on an engine stand. Much easier than jumping up and down.

If you don't have the time to take it down then just drive it and if it starts getting worse look for some alternative transportation until you can fix it right. Good luck.

Pull the pan and see whats wrong.
Sometime back with about 80,000 miles, I heard what I thought was a rod knock after I lost oil pressure. Long story made short, the oil pressure turned out to be an intermittent oil pressure sensor, and the knock was the AC compressor clutch, but better to be safe than sorry when you see no oil pressure on the highway.

I pulled the pan and plasti-gauged the rods and mains. My crank looked good with no signs of wear, the rod bearings were showing signs of wear, and the mains were within tolerance and looked like new. I replaced the oil pump and rod bearing only. When you change your rod bearings, plasti gauge a new bearing and check your clearance, there are 0.001 over sized rod bearings available which will bring a worn crank back to tolerance.

I now have 230,000 miles on the Jeep and have a solid 35 psi at idle after a long drive on hot day in Florida.
