Sunrider - Unlimited Pain

Newbie here. Just bought a '04 Unlimited and I've watched the videos on the sunroof until I was blue in the face.

What I thought would be a 4 minute excursion turned into a thirty minute cursing and sweating adventure ultimately ending with a fight with my wife.

I can't seem to make it fold in two. It will fold back easily enough, but doesn't seem to double up.

I've looked and looked and it I don't see anyway that it's supposed to do this.

Now I'm beginning to wonder, does it only flip back? :surrender:

Losing my mind in VB.

Hey newbie!
Are you talkin about just flipping the front part of the top back like a sun roof or the whole top?

JDsDream 06-18-2012 03:38 PM

Okay, there are 2 plastic strips that fit into the retaining channel over the doors. Remove both of them from the channels. As you are lifting the front grab the top between those pieces and fold them back into a > position. Then just lay the top back. One piece of advice though, DO NOT pull the pins from the door surrounds.

Thanks all for the fast responses and apologize for not searching on what is a common subject on this forum as I found the answer, the pins.

When this venture started I noticed that both pins were disconnected and tried with all of my might to get them back in, decided to work around them.

Now I see that was knuckleheaded and I also need to release the sails to get them back in place.

Wife doesn't want me touching the top again for awhile, so as soon as things cool down I'll try it again.

Hi, just the sunroof. I think the problem is the pins were disconnected.

njaneardude 06-19-2012 06:56 PM

I think it's a lost cause. Both pin assemblies are broken in one way or another so although I might be able to latch one side down, I can't the other.
I disconnected the sails, sunroof and unzipped the windows to give me some wiggle room but still couldn't get one side to latch down (pin).

The other problem is the plastic piece (not sure what this does) can slide forward on one side, but is stuck on the other. :banghead:

The plastic pieces slide forward so the frame can pivot. Once you get it to bend there the stop when the frame is straight up and down. Fold the fabric toward the rear and it will lay down on itself when you lay the frame back. Let me know if that makes sense. It does in my head.

Would my 2003 stock Rubicon have the sunrider option? Was it available then and how would I know if I have it?

I push up on the bend of the bar mid way towards the back and it makes the pins pop in way easier.

Try twisting it.

Has anyone driven on the freeway with the top folded back? Does anybody tie or bungee cord or tie it down?

you don't have it. it was only available on 04-06 LJ's, and as an option for 2006 TJ's.

but, you can modify your top to be a sunrider.

I drive 80 mph this morning with it open... I did have it strapped down... As long as u keep another window open it seems to be fine.

After reading this thread yesterday, I decided to try out my sunrider feature again on my 05 LJ. I had tried it the first week I got it in 2007, haven't used it since then.
I followed the instructions in the owners manual.

It took about 3 minutes, and worked exactly as designed.

Thanks! I folded it on my way home. I was worried it might catch air, but the windshield generates a negative pressure area so there is really no wind blowing on it.
