RECON LED turn signals
 
Hey yall,

I just got a pair of Recon LED smoke turn signals from a friend. There were no instructions. It says simple plug and play in minutes. I looked at my current set-up and it didnt look the same. Could it be the 07-11 turn signal seating is different from the 2012? If it is the same, does anyone have installation instructions? I couldnt find them online.

I don't know what exactaly you have but there are some youtube videos for the install of the Recon lights.

I just replaced all the bulbs, inside and out, with LED bulbs and I am very happy with the results.

I just installed my Recon LED's it is Plug N' Play what you have to do is just pull the light bulb out from your current socket and plug the Recon LED there, you still use the factory harness (it's like changing the light bulb, you know where you plug the actual light bulb in right?...that's where you plug the LED in)

Sorry to bring back an old one but curious how these lights are holding up. There are other comments about their durability and issues with rapid blinking unless additional parts are installed. Thanks.

So far I haven't had any problems but I did have to add the resistors to keep it from hyper flashing...now the work great, I love tem and they are bite at night!

How right you are. At superbrightleds.com, the warranty is 2 years per bulb.

I have had Recon lighting on a few vehicles and they have been flawless, others I know have had a few problems. I would buy again in a heartbeat.

How exactly did you get your resistors to work? i took one end of resistor and clamped it to outside white wire and the other end of resistor was tied to metal lug nut under light housing

Recon turn signal light hyper flash resolution!
 
Ok so after reading the instructions (no help at all) then calling them (no help at all) I figured it out with the help of some other guy on another tread page.

Step 1. pull off guard and disconnect light BULBS (not the housing) just pull the bulbs out.

take out OEM turn signal lights by pushing the tabs in and sliding them out

put in new Recon lights like they should be according to tabs.

Step 2. pull you wires out of the black plastic cover exposing the THREE wires. 2 white and 1 black wire.

take your resistor sent with Recon lights and using one of the blue wire connectors take the OUTSIDE WHITE wire and connect it to one of the wires in the resistor. then take the other wire of the resistor (opposite side) and using the other blue wire connector connected the resistor wire to the BLACK wire.

Step 3. repeat the same on the other light. Maybe wrap it all up with some electrical tape if you want.

Thats it.

Trouble shooting: I had to really make sure the blue connecters were crimped on using some pliers.

Also use some double sided tape to secure resistor to body somewhere. The instructions suggest they'll turn into lava but as long as you don't have your turn signal on for 3 hours its fine.

When taping into the wiring using blue Scotch Locks use dielectric grease to avoid corrosion. If you just use electrical tape it will hold salt and dirt eventually corroding the wiring in half. I'd even tape it after using dielectric grease.

I'm pulling some RECON LED turn signals out of my 07 JK right now. The "bulb connector", clear plastic part failed on one of them. For $120 a pair, in my opinion, the construction is not worth the money. There's also an issue with the way they connect to the existing wiring...they use the old bulb socket, but leave the connection unprotected from moisture. I had significant corrosion on both sides from this.

Next, I opened up one of the RECON units. What I found was not encouraging. When the clear plastic connector failed, the three wires leading to the LED board pulled the etch right off the PCB, because the wires are not strain-reliefed inside the black housing.

The above being said, the RECON units did work, without any quick flashing or bulb out indicator. They were extremely dim, though, and this may have been due to the way the external 6-ohm power resistor was installed: in SERIES with the orange wire!

I'm going back to factory incandescents, then trying some SuperBrightLEDs 3157 replacements.

Just finished. They worked perfectly, and are WAY brighter than the RECON units.

Details:
I was wrong about the series resistor, it's 8 ohms, 25W and wired between two of the wires leading to the lamp connector. He used those stupid crimp connectors, but I wasn't going to mess with it. I'll wait till they break and then do the job right. Wrapped his mess with self vulcanizing electrical tape to do a better waterproofing job and left it.

First, I replaced the RECONs with these (if your JK is still stock, skip this):
Crown Automotive 55077884AD - Passenger Side Front Parking & Turn Signal Lamp for 07-14 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec (there's a different one for the driver's side - $20 each)

Then, I dropped two of these in place of the bulbs ($13 each):
3157 LED Bulb - Dual Intensity 1 x 3 Watt High Power LED w/ Reflector Lens | LED Brake Light, Turn Light and Tail Light Bulbs | LED Car Bulbs | Super Bright LEDs

If you have a stock 07 JK, you can upgrade to LED front turn signals for the cost of two LED 3157 replacements and two 8-ohm 25W aluminum body power resistors ($4 each):
RH0258R000FE02 - VISHAY DALE RH0258R000FE02 - RESISTOR, WIREWOUND, 8 OHM, 25W, 1% | Newark element14 US )

Make sure you bolt the power resistors to something metal so they don't burn up.
I recommend soldering and heat shrink instead of the crimp connectors for tying the resistors into the lamp connector harness.

One quick question though, when you connect the LEDs into the light socket housing there is a black wire with a moon shaped open connector coming out of the LEDs. Is that some sort of grounding? What did you do with that? Any help would be appreciated!

You don't do anything with it. It is not needed for your application. You can cut it off if you want.

Great instructions, has anyone put these in a 2013? Box says 2007 through 2012 JK. Tried to put them in my 2013, and the connector does not seem to fit in the harness. Any suggestions?

Installed these tonight and got the flashing issue with the turn signal out message. The turn signals came with the resistor attached and I used the moon shaped clip to ground it. What am I doing wrong?

Okay, little tip. Cut off the in line resistor that comes with the lights. Use the resistor that needs to be hardwired from the box. Works great now.

I barely understand any of the steps that were listed, I guess im not a lighting guy! Can anyone take a picture of how to properly connect the little gold and blue pieces to the actual light for this to work properly?

When you cut off the moon shaped ground, should I also cut off the black in line resistor as well? I have the gold resisters it came with hooked up so the ground and the black resistor just hang. My left light doesnt work at all, the right does but after 5 or 6 blinks it still does the hyper flash/dash warning

Here's a tip for mounting the big gold power resistors: use a "bulldog clip"...one of those black clips with the chrome flippy handles that people use to hold papers together. The come in various sizes and are strong.

Stop at Radio Shack and pick up some cheap "transistor heat sink compound". Smear this on the bottom surface of the resistor, and it will hold itself to one of the vertical pieces of metal inside the fender. Now, clamp it there with the bulldog clip. No drilling required. Great heat transfer.

Mine didn't come with resistors that needed hard wired. Do you have the part number?
