thats pretty sweet idea thanks

snochick 06-23-2012 03:23 AM

Looks good. Unfortunately I'm the one who would've had to do the sewing. It was worth $100 not to crack my teeth trying not to cuss in front of the kids. Lol

rtguy 06-23-2012 03:55 AM

the sewing went pretty smoothy actually....just folded it in with about a 2" seam..put a stitch all the way down then stitched again at the edge.
saved me $160 over the cost of the shadecage

Hey!

Your DIY looks pretty cool! I might like to copy it so any details you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

That's sweet !!!

Diy

ok...so I got the solar screen at home depot

48 in. x 84 in. Charcoal Super Solar Screen-3001982 at The Home Depot

it comes 48"x84"

I cut a piece about 54" long for the top, and 2 pieces 22"x32" for the side coverings. I folded each edge with 2" overlap and used a sewing machine to stich it....one stitch along the inside of the fold and one at the edge for durability. the stitch lines are at both fingers in the pic.

I used some metal grommets and installed in various places along this doubled up seam. The kit we had has the tool to cut the hole and hammer in the grommets. I test fit the top and used a paint pen to mark the spots to install the grommets. I also painted them black before begiining the project.

Once the grommets were installed I put the top on. I used these bungee balls from Harbor freight. I used around 12 for the top and like 5-6 for the sides.

4 Piece Ball Stretch Cord Set

Some of the bungees are used on the top and the top edge of the window pieces. It took some adjusting to get in tight. You can pull the knot through on the ball and cut and retie to make them smaller as well.

you can probably take it to an alteration shop(for suits and such) and they will stitch it for you. it will still be a fraction of the cost of buying the kit....just a thought

**bump**

because of its awesomeness.

snicksrolos 07-02-2012 01:25 PM

How do you find this project working out for you? Is it durable? Is it offering a lot of sun protection? Can anyone reccommend this after trying it out for a while?

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll be putting this together over the weekend. Wish me luck!

By the way, is there anything you would change now that you've been riding with it for a while? How does it fare on the highway? Any noise or flapping?

i've been very happy with it....sadly my hardtop is back on for the time being.

i wouldn't change anything. it does flap a bit on the top rear. if it was longer or shorter it would stop this

Great DIY project looks good I might jus try it out myself

Phrogmech46 07-19-2012 07:41 PM

I just bought everything I need for this project and dropped off the material to be sewn.

Here is my total for the project:
Lowes: Phifer 48"x 84" Charcoal Super Solar Screen $21
Ace: X2 Bungee Balls packs of ten $10
Ace: Grommet kit 3/8" ID with tool $9
Sewing fee $20
Total: $60

I will update you guys when I pick up the screen from the tailor shop and finish the project. This is a great functional DIY that anyone can do. If I knew someone that sews it would of only cost me $40. One thing I noticed is that the label on the screen has the same claim of 90% sun blocking abilities as the Spidershade website. I am curious how similar these materials are and would like to compare them.

rtguy 07-19-2012 08:47 PM

glad u guys are loving this DIY shade. it works great...i'm tellin yah. the hot days are totally tolerable with this shade. it makes a huge difference and blocks most of the sun. $60 is much better than the other price tag....lol

Came out awesome. 64" in total length for the unlimited and the soundbar grommet locations are 19-1/4" length wise from the corners toward the sound bar.

HarleyDad09 07-29-2012 05:03 PM

Im doing this Mod this week..went to Lowes today, but they didnt have the right roll in stock!

Phrogmech46 07-30-2012 10:52 AM

Update: The middle rear bungee snapped the other day after a 3 hour drive with at 80mph with no doors on. I think the bungee was rubbing on the corner of the rear interior light. I will be adding two more grommets and bungees today to spread the load some more.

First time using a sewing machine! Turned out great. I think i will add a grommet on each side above the rear door post. That would take all the wrinkles out. Thanks alot for sharing rtguy!

nomrlz 08-09-2012 08:04 PM

great idea! i think the wifes gonna hafta make one for her new JKU

rtguy 08-10-2012 05:23 AM

no problem!! glad you like it.

Makes me think about having a narrow strip to put across the top of the area where the driver's door would be if it weren't off. My left ear cooks in the sun since even with the driver's visor extended and swung over; it doesn't cover the top-of-the-door-area completely. This would provide just enough shade while being rather discreet.

And god knows us Gecko drivers are a low key group of jeeprs.

Now I just gotta figure out the grommet part. Harbor freight...?

Just read this, but after posting above I went to.... Harbor Freight!
Picked up the grommet tool which was on sale as you noted, as well as those elastic straps with the balls on them -- also on sale.

And while I was there, I picked up a jigsaw for under $20. Love HF.

Gonna use the jig to trim my fenders.

Had anyone used this versus the solar mesh? Is there a difference? Sun guard vs. Pet screen?
