2.4L hard to start
I have a 2004 TJ with the 2.4L four banger. 42k on the odometer. Out of the blue, it has gotten very hard to start. The starter turns over strong, but the engine just won't catch. It takes up to five or more minutes of trying to get it to start before it will catch. When it does, it runs very rough for 6-8 seconds, then smooths out perfectly, and will run like a champ from that point on. If I shut it down and immedietly restart, it is fine. If I wait a few minutes and restart, the whole cycle repeats itself. During the starting scenario, you can smell fuel after the first couple of trys. I have jumped out the fuel pump relay and let the pump run for 60 seconds or so before trying to start to see if I may have had the common anti-drainback issue, but this doesn't seem to make a difference.

Any ideas?

TRy turning the key to run and leave it there for 1 or 2 sec then start it and if it starts right away it could be your fuel pump.:)

Thanks for the welcome!

I have tried the fuel pump trick, I even bypassed the fuel pump relay and had the pump run constantly. Still no dice.

Good spark to all cylinders? Does the 2.4 use a coil pack? Is the check engine light on?
