overheating 2012 Rubicon

I have a 2012 Rubicon and having a heating problem 75% when wheeling. But does come down then go back up. It appears a though the thermostat is not feathering to allow smooth cooling of the engine.

I had a 2010 Rubi and traded it for the ‘12. Never ever had a problem with the ‘10 gauge always on 50% no matter how hot it got. Got a “Idnotknow” from the dealer, but this is a problem Jeep will have to address. I just hope there is sufficient cooling in the system to control this problem.

Any body else have this problem???

Even in normal driving my needle is half way to Hot....

Blastek 06-26-2012 01:39 PM

i think someone mentioned this but the needle indication is not analog. if the engine is in a normal temperature range, the needle goes to half and does not move. if you are running a bit hot, the needle goes from half to 3/4. If something is way too hot, the needle jumps to 100%.

i think it's expected that your temperature may be above normal while crawling around at low speeds. especially if you're in 4-low. the engine is revving higher, but the airflow is only 1-2mph. people have also said that a winch significantly reduces the airflow.

snikt 06-26-2012 02:54 PM

It doesn't just jump to 3/4. I've seen mine slowly climb from 1/2 way climbing a 5000FT gain road. It still was way below 3/4 though at it's highest

I still have trouble believing this as my needle sweeps when warming up. It also goes from just below half to just above half in traffic on a hot day.

C6Rubicon 06-26-2012 07:55 PM

I have a 12 JKUR with a winch. Never had an overheating problem while wheeling. The needle stays at halfway.

azpics 06-26-2012 09:04 PM

In normal driving at speed stays at 50% but as soon as I do city driving the temp goes up almost to 75%, then slowly varies from 65% t0 75%. Start driving at speed and goes down to 50% until I stop for a light then about 65or 75% depending on how lng the light is red.
Having the engine temp change like this is really not good for the engine.

Would have thought Jeep, especially with Rubicons would have this thought out.

Mentioned before my '10 Rubi always even in over temps of 100 and wheeling stayed stuck on 50%. Would have expected that on the '12.

Ok, I have to ask. With the engine cold is the radiator full of coolant and with the engine hot is the coolant in the overflow reservoir at the "maximum" mark?

Rhodyjeep 06-26-2012 11:29 PM

For comparison reasons only, and in line with the OP's question, does anyone know the difference (if any) in core size/width of the radiator between the '10 and '12? Not apples to apples, just curious. I'm not sure of either size.

azpics 06-27-2012 10:18 AM

The level is at max was the first thing I checked. Thanks

azpics 06-27-2012 10:21 AM

Rhrodyjeep: that is a good question and one of my main concerns. But, since the temp does fluctuate even while in traffic still think it is more a temperature control issue rather than capacity. Thanks

pluke the 2 06-27-2012 10:23 AM

our 12's rubicon transmission runs 25-40 degrees hotter than our 2010 sport does.

azpics 06-27-2012 07:02 PM

Just heard from a friend who took delivery of a 12 Rubicon unlimited and wheels in Southern Arizona in fact ast Friday when temps were well over 100. He said he has no increase in temp at all and needle remains on 50% all the time. So guess I do have a problem.

Rudolph78 08-08-2012 02:41 AM

Hi I am from South Frica and have a 2012 Rubicon.

Tempreture yesterday was 1°C. When I tow my off road trailer the head gauge go to the 3/4 mark. When it hit the mark I am over the little uphill. Not a serious hill at all.
The trailer is 1ton.

Rubicon have 4000km on the clock.

Any answers on this problem so far?

JEEP want to connect it now to a Y TECH machine.

I still call BS on this as mine goes from below half to above half depending on how hot it gets. Very minor fluctuation but it does indeed exist.

Rudolph78 08-08-2012 10:14 AM

Jeep call today and said they had a look when I had the car yesterday with them and the plastic cover that is normally under the bumper is not there and they think that is the cause of this.

I have a Mopar steel bumper on my Jeep Rubicon 3.6

I just think it is a joke. Let the game and fun begins.

Laughs actually for them

tomthbomb 08-08-2012 10:19 AM

With 18k miles on my '12 the needle has never gone over 1/2. Usually it stays 1 click below half.

ferninAZ 08-08-2012 10:22 AM

I have noticed that my needle is to the left of the middle line but still touching the line during daily commuting. I live in AZ so it is a little warm pretty much all the time. When I am off roading, specifically when going up hill in 2wd or 4wd hi at low speeds the needle passes the center position and moves to what I would say is the 60% position. Thanks Chrysler for not putting numbers on the temp gauge. When I return to a downhill position or switch to 4wd lo, it moves back to its regular driving position.

Rudolph78 08-08-2012 11:47 AM

This is not acceptable for the era that we in and for me then, that heat gauge is off ZERO meaning for me. I had several cars in the past. Non of them had a temperature gauge that fluctuate for nothing. Where will the temperature gauge go when I hit a very long uphill.

When is it a warning for you that the car is running actually hot??

daggo66 08-08-2012 11:57 AM

Have you heard the electric fan come on at all?

Jkduke 08-08-2012 11:58 AM

The needle stays in the middle from about 180 deg through at least 250deg, doesn't mean much.

In my experience the only way to see such high numbers is after you park the vehicle with the engine turned off, it climbs like a rocket! there's some truth to opening the hood after wheeling.. or install PoisonSpiderCustoms Louvers.

Your Fan may be busted, have you gotten much water in it? the OEM fan isn't waterproof! there's a thread around here somewhere with a replacement recommendation.

N3M0 08-08-2012 12:01 PM

my needle always seems to be a hair to the right off middle no matter what kind of driving im doing.

Peepers 08-08-2012 12:12 PM

And this is why a lot of manufacturers are replacing all the gauges with idiot lights...

Rudolph78 08-08-2012 12:23 PM

Yes the fan kicks in and you can hear when it is on Speed 1 and on Speed 2.

So is the 2012 Rubicon Fan not waterproof as well??? WTF?????

This car cone leave me in Africa. Good to know. I will take the steelers on, on it as well.

Jkduke 08-08-2012 12:25 PM

I've collected these numbers using the ODBII reader on iPhone.. louvers dropped my cruise temps from 220 down to 196. Being able to run the fan for 5-10 minutes after shutting down would make a huge difference. Could add a timer, maybe when i install 2nd battery?

Cat temp swings from just under 1300 cruising all the way to almost 1600 at full power!

WTF do you mean "as well"? The words electric and waterproof do not go well together.
