How do I replace cheapo front dash speakers with new cheapo ones?
Sorry for the redundancy. I posted this under general tech, but thought I'd ask the TJ forum too:

I have the bone stock stereo in my 98 TJ. I like it cuz no one will wanna steal it.:whistling:
I'm thinking of replacing the old speakers (only one works) with the cheapest speakers I can find of the same size.
I've looked around here a lot. Will I have to do some kind of modification to a bracket or flange or something? Or can I just remove the cover grill, unbolt the old one, unplug it, wire up new one, and bolt it in?
Anyone done this "like kind" swap?

Quadratec sells Kicker brand direct replacement. They are around $100 for the fronts and $100 for the sound bar. They are plug and play You can go to Walmart and get cheap replacement speakers also I think made by pyramid they will be around $60 for all four but will need some kind of modification but not to bad! Good luck!

Yep just get same size a 4x6 should bolt rite up 5.25 factory or 6.5 with new holes in the sound bar. the stock head unit will do better with cheaper speakers. It's easy.:)

To begin with you can use the dash speakers from a newer 7 speaker system . They have an enclosure so you don't hear the sound from the back of the speaker which is not what you want to hear . I disco'd the tweeters they have two seperate speakers mounted in one enclosure and used a pair of MB Quart tweeters on top of the dash in the corners and the crossovers that cam with the tweeters . None of the speakers you put in those locations will give you a full sound because of their size a power from the OE radio but can be great as you progressivly build a better sounding set up . They make adapters to put 5 1/4 or bigger in the same location but they will have no enclosure and the tweeters which are highly directional will be behind part of the dash structure , also not a good idea. That size speakers makes it sound like it would be great on paper but having the rear of the speaker exposed you may as well have them hanging from a string . the dash pods can be bought on Ebay cheap just as with any speaker that fits there you wont get any bass response because of size and the larger speakers that can fit will have no enclosure so once again , no bass .

Thanks for the help fellas.
Gonna pull the grill off and have a look. Maybe I'll bring the old one into wallie world with me to make sure.
6x9 is the stock size right?

Guess I should've also asked if the 4x6's need to be all-weather? Or will any 4x6 work? Wallie world has some for about $20

No need for all weather unless you spray a Jose at them!

I've heard the TJ 4x6 is different than other 4x6 bolt up patterns. I bought an adapter plate from NalinMFG, allows you to goto a 5.25 speaker, and alot more options in price and quality than 4x6, which is a off breed size and kind of speaker.

from their facebook page, not mine...i didnt paint mine or anything

BigDog21 06-30-2012 04:31 PM

You will need to buy a bracket to install new speakers in your dash (4X6 or 5 1/2). You can get them from About $8 I think.

Drock1979 06-30-2012 07:13 PM

Or buy a 4x6 plate speaker better sound and plate built in.

The right front one is toast. Tried to plug it into the left plug and no go. Just bought the exact same 4x6 Kenwoods that were in there. They sound like crap, but as long as there's sound of some kind, i don't care. Hope the new one just plugs in and works. Will post follow up as soon as they're in.

fltlndrlvl3 07-31-2012 09:00 PM your choice of what will fit, Good directions, and any wiring or fit adjustments you need...and free shipping... Worth a look,

Just go to Wally-World and get Pioneer speakers. They make speakers that fit right into both places Dash/light bar $20+ each set. You can get a detachable face Kenwood stereo for $80 at Best buy or also Wally-world- If someone steels it not a big deal.

I took my old 4x6 speakers (Dash). Took a dremmel tool and cut out around the base near the paper/magnet. I used the old speaker as a mounting bracket. The pioneer will bold right on the old mount. CHEAP.

I posted pictures in the other Jeep forum

Thanks guys. I did walk into wallie world the other day but no 4x6s. Ordered kenwoods on amazon, 2 day shipping. Amazon prime. Gotta love it.
I kinda like having the old school stereo in there, but I wonder if I can add aux input so I can plug in an iPod...

0iii0 08-01-2012 09:09 AM

what i would have done was save up 2-300 and replace the whole system with quality parts AND gotten a decent head unit that has AUX and USB support

WeekenderATX 08-01-2012 09:25 AM

The boss is already on my case about $$. If I can have a local stereo shop add aux input for cheap, I'll do it. Otherwise, I'll start the hunt for old school cassette tapes. Heh.

WeekenderATX 08-02-2012 08:56 PM

Got my new 4x6s installed. No problemo. Easy. Was worried initially about the right one but then I remembered I had the balance all the way left. When centered, sounded fine. Whew! Duh. Glad I realized my mistake before wasting a bunch of time and money. Heh.
