steel wheel balancing!!!
 
I had installed the soft 8 on 32'' bfg yesterday.. Each wheel took about 1-2 pounds of weight.. and it still slightly vibrates..

And yes pounds not ounces..

Is this the case for you guys whith steel wheels?

holy crap, pounds???? are you sure? i didn't think a pound would fit on a wheel. that isn't acceptable. more than 2 ounces per side is a lot, bigger tires maybe 3 per side. you gotta have the tires dismounted, and put on a different spot on the rim untill it gets down to 3 ounces. i had 33's that took 4 ounces per side. you can't get a good balance with 2 pounds of weights on there.

O-M-G .... there is NO REASON for a wheel to take that much weight. The retards who did it were just lazy. Take it back and bitch or take it else where.

I (using a tire machine) just did 35s and the worst one was 8.5 ounces(after rotating 180 degrees) and that took up almost 1/2 of rim (and one ounce stick on inside)...the one that was more I rotated 180 degrees and decreased weight to about 2 ounces. One needed 1 ounce, and the other 2 2-4 ounces. 8.5 ounce was the new record with this balancer. Others have required more, but never balanced to zero while 8.5 balanced to zero second time.

I also run on board wheel balancers on the front for 6 ounces of additional help as they unbalance themselves.

Over a pound sounds dangerous!!

I took a long time also.. However I set the machine in a way to take weights on the inner lip and the middle of the wheel (tape weights).. like alloy wheels.. I did not want the weights showing on the outside.. I know balancing it on the inner and outter side of the lip of the whel would take less weights. but I dont like how it looks.

I mean it shakes slightly but not like it was on my stock wheel.. I took a lot of time balancing whese wheels.. And the balance machine was a good machine. I am probably jst going to use weights on the outside. its too bad, because having them all black looks good.

Ok but I'm sorry, I'd rather have the weights on the lip than a pound of them on the inside.

Yea, I've seen badly boogered welds before but never boogered balancing. If you don't like the silver weights on the outside PAINT THE DAM THINGS.
I've had tires that I've had to air back down, rotate and try again but I'm not a real experienced balancer, I just have access to 3 machines at my customer/friends shop and it takes me about 5 minutes to remember which lever does what, they all like to stop and watch me till I figure it out, cheap entertainment.... Then they all get a kick out of me pinching my fingers while trying to get the weights onto the wheels with those dam bead protected BFG's.
I guess the tap tap OW tap tap is amusing...
Rule of thumb he says is 'we only use the big weights when rebalancing WORN tires. If you need them for new you need to rotate it on the wheel 90 or 180 degrees. I wish they would mark the heavy spot on BFG's the way they do on motorcycle tires with that dot so you know to put it for a start.

heading to yosemite tomorrow.. for a 500 miles round trip test.. im sure when I get back i'll have the weights on the outside.

i think you'll do better by breaking them back down, rotate them, and use the pound on weights. i know you might not want to see the weights, but that's not gonna last.

Reading thru it again you mentioned that it shakes slightly. Is it a small vibration or a big one?

If you don't like the look of the weights you could always try using ceramic beads on the inside. You just take out the valve stem, pour them thru the opening, and forget 'em. Click Here for the web site. Nice part is that they will accommodate any changes in the tire (i.e. from wear or lost lugs).

Ditto. The beads really work. :blunt:

I know some guys who went to Wal-Mart and bought a couple of those big Air-Soft containers. They dumped about half a jug in each wheel, seem to work good for them.
