HI guys I am in need of some help I am NOT mechanically smart and my best friend got stuck in the woods last night long story shortened I broke my Cj in the woods I'm thinking maybe my spider gears like I said I am not mechanically smart when I put my trans in any gear including reverse and let off the clutch it sounds like gears are grinding in my rear axle I was told its a 78 cj7 with a Amc 360 motor t3 trans Dana 30 front and Amc 20 in the rear my question is is that fixable? How do u fix it? Should I find a new axle? Will a Dana 35 from a 94 yj fit and run right? Why does alot of ppl do a ford 8.8 swap in jeeps? I'm in need of some seriouse help and really appreciate any help this unfortnatly is my daily and till i get it fixed ill b riding my bike rain or shine everywhere.~ thanx

If you pop off the rear diff cover, you should see the gears. Put the rear of the jeep on jackstands with the wheels off the ground (trans in neutral) and spin the wheels slowly looking for chipped or broken teeth on the ring gear.
If its chipped, take out the carrier, clean all the metal shavings out, and get a new ring and pinion set. (Count the teeth on both to make sure you get the right ratio)
If its not chipped, it could be elsewhere in the jeep, or elsewhere in the axle, you could pull the shafts and check them for wear but i doubt it would be them.
The ford 8.8 swap is a common thing for jeeps because its ~30% stronger than a dana 44 with its thicker tubes and larger diameter shafts.

If you dont have one piece axels then you probably broke it at the axel to flange. two - three hundrend for one piece axels.

Turns out it was the shafts pulling them tomorrow and seeing what I can find looks like the axle gear fluid was stock from 78 lol

ended up going with some one piece axles little over 300$ for them but i think it was a well worth investment and today i get my tj paid off so i get to start working on it
