My 2004 TJ (56XXX miles) is making a distinct grinding noise when coming out of first gear. Not a very loud noise but noticeable to me. Sounds like metal on metal but i could be wrong. This is happening in first and first gear ONLY, coming out of it from a dead stop. Not sure what else to say about the problem. Assuming this is the original trans and clutch. The Jeep still has a 90 day warranty left on it so i want the problem to get fixed and not have the dealer blow me off. Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks all !!!

Might be throw out bearings going bad, mine has it in any gear if I am going too slow and press the gas, mostly in second and third the rattle appears since I'm constantly stopping and going in those gears. Major repair since transmission needs to be removed and clutch replaced, if throwout bearings malfunction you cannot shift out of the gear you are in, or you have to force it in (I think), so yeah very important. Good luck. Take her to a mechanic for an official report and take it back to the dealer with warranty papers.

Mine has done the same thing from the day I bought it. Nothing has gotten worse...yet...

Just got back from the dealer, the technician quotes: "...everything is fine and normal, the noise you hear is the motor hesitating." That doesn't make any sense to me, anyone have any thoughts upon what he said? :banghead:
