Rear Main Seal Leaking after 26,000 miles?

Today when I was changing the oil on the wifes Jeep, I noticed a bunch of oil running down the Back of the oil pan like the rear main seal was leaking on the transmission.

Is the a common occurance on a 2005 4.0L Wrangler with only 26,000 miles?

can it be the oil pan gasket.. mine has a slight seep but not dripping. I think its the oil pan for me anyway.

Mines only got 40k and is also weeping. Not nearly enough to worry about though

Feel around the back of the valve cover with a rag, the valve cover bolts can loosen over time and they do a very good impersonation of a rear main seal leak. Or just stick a socket back there and see if the bolts are loose, I think they torque out to around 10Ft/lbs, just don't break one.

I had a rear main around 26 to 28k in my 05. Took 2 trips to the dealer to get it solved too. The first time they swore it wasnt leaking...

yeah it doesnt look like the back of the valve covers are leaking, it def looks like the rear main seal since theres a bunch of oil dripping down the transmission casing and the rear of the oil pan.

I had the same problem on my 2005 unlimited with auto transmission, toke it to the dealer and the tech guy said the leak was from the oil pan gasket so they replaced under warranty. Here is a pic of what mine looked like when it was leaking. Have no more leak.

Yep thats Exactly what it looks like!

Looks like a trip to the Stealer.. if its under warrenty its worth it to have them fix it. Ive got too many projects. esp this Big block im in the process of rebuilding.

Thanks for the heads up!

As I was doing my life this weekend I found mine was looking like this also (only 38000 miles). I can't believe these leak this soon.... Post what the dealer tells ya - I may see what my local yocal says about my warranty and the leak.

Seals & gaskets will fall under the 7/70 powertrain warranty. Usually a $100.00 deductable applies to the original purchaser. At least that's the way it is on my 04'.

EnigmaMan 04-07-2008 01:41 PM

Called up Lithia Jeep and they are going to take a look at it tomorrmow morning. if it is the rear main seal they said that "There would be a $100 deductable" so much for the warrenty. :flipoff: Is the deductable of $100 per incident or is this $100 deductable a one time deal?

For $100 I would rather buy the parts $10 and just drop / replace it my self lol

JCS05Rubi 04-07-2008 04:31 PM

from my understanding 100 every time. If your dealers are anything like the ones around here, or what i read on the web, your probably going to end up paying 200/300 for the dealer to admit theres a problem and attempt to fix it :) :D

EnigmaMan 04-07-2008 05:39 PM

Hence they are called "The Stealer". Those retards are charging $100/hr and maybe spend 5 mins looking at the problem. :bottom: I think they are all like that to be honst.. though Jeep does seem to be the worst. If they dont "find a problem" its "$100 and a :flipoff: :bottom:" LOL

at least w/ Chevy Dealers if you think you have a problem you bring it in and they check it out no questions asked.

JCS05Rubi 04-07-2008 07:59 PM

Yea, don't get me wrong, all dealers are a pain to deal with, but Jeep dealers make you want to put a gun to your head sometimes. I have never seen a dealer do some of the crudy stuff that Jeep dealers do, just to try and either avoid a warranty claim, or make money on the deal by doing it shady.. :)

orange05tj 04-07-2008 08:42 PM

mine went at 17000 and then again at 21000.

JeepGuyLJ 04-07-2008 09:51 PM

Its going to be the oil pan gasket and they don't charge you $100 for the job cause its under warranty. Ill look through my papers a post what the dealer actually did to the jeep for no charge. I don't think their supposed to charge you a deductable even if its a rear main seal.

Alright got a a call from the Stealership. Lithia Jeep on Arapahoe in Denver, co. They said that the oil pan gasket was leaking and then they also said that the "Pinion seal" was leaking?? Im guessing this is for the stering Gear box?

All 100% covered under warranty.

JeepGuyLJ 04-08-2008 04:55 PM

Glad to hear that the stealership is covering everything that has to be done.

botlfed98 04-09-2008 09:51 AM

wow can't believe that low of miles and rear main already??

james1231 04-09-2008 01:17 PM
