Regearing
 
So I am thinking of doing the regear thing, now that the Jeep is sitting on 35s.

Anyone have recs on a good shop? Any other info to help this gear newb?

Ideally, I'd like to run 5.38s but I heard the stock axles limit the options to 4.88.

Holbrook Specialties, you WILL NOT find anywhere more competent, and they are Jeepers to boot.

I travel from the Gorge to have Leonards off road in Hillsboro do all my gear work.
He has done numerous Jeeps, all of them and knows his stuff.
Btw, he does the work himself. and he is anal too. Imo, more then I am on my own rig. lol
I can give you "many more references" too, Of Jeep guys else where who have had their work done by him, and won't go anywhere else for gear setups.

Nothing against Holbrook, At the time people I trusted said, Go to Leonard's and that's what I did.. 20 yrs later, I haven't had a reason to go anywhere else. Leonard can be "very busy" at times. But to me when he is it's worth the wait.. :-)

Iv'e heard good things about Loenard's, another good option that would be my chioce is Pat at the good guys auto care in Clackamas. He is a jeeper as well.

Yup, Leonard did my gears and installed my TrueTracs - quality work :). I highly recommend Leonard's.

Scott, you are a non-rubi right? If so, the highest you can go is 5.13's.

Are you and auto or manual? Do you plan on going to 37's?

IMO I'd try to go 4.56's with that set up. might cost you more, but 4.88's and 35's with the 6 spd will put you at almost 3k rpms on the highway at 70 mph. I'm on 5.13's and 40's and I'm very happy with the end result.

If your going to add lockers it would be the perfect time to do it as well.

I'll talk to Banks316 and see if he'd like to start doing gear installs with me. If so we would be able to do a gear job for you cheaper than anywhere else around.

There is only about a 180 RPM difference @ 70 Mph.. Between 4.56's and 4.88's...

Between the two you can see it's not really that big of difference.
Mileage between the two gears "could" be a toss up.. 4.56's makes more sense to me here.
But no reason to run a higher rpm on a flat freeway... Which (4.56's)should also pull most grades as well.

Yes, my last Jeep was a 6-speed manual as well, I ran 35's with 3.73's..
If I could have kept the 6-speed I would have got 4.56's..

I charge $500 labor for a full gear set install if your interested. All you would need is the gear sets and a minor install kit. Depending on your current set up you might need a new carrier to accept the lower gears. A full case locker like ARB, OX, Eton, Truetrac would work great or just and open carrier with out spider gears.

I have 35 and have Yukon 4.88 with five speed manual tranny. I love it. Good power and go 70 mph easy on the freeways. I went up north to Everett Washington to Randy's Ring and Pinion. They make and distribute the Yukon gears. They have there own gear shop. They are fast and knowledgeable because ring and pinion is all they do. Little expensive but worth every penny. Get the Yukon gears.
