Need some help with trip to Outer Banks, NC!

Hey guys,
Figured i'd come here and ask. I'm taking a road trip down to Outer Banks, NC and trying to gather up some stuff to do, nice places to stay, eat, etc. I will be in my Jeep so I am down to offroad a bit too!

Any suggestions? Thanks guys!

North of Corolla seems to be a nice place to go.

We went there in June and the southern shores are great. Just depends on what you like. A lot of off roading with miles of beach to yourself, or at least when we went there. If you need dept stores stay northern outer banks if you don't ma an pa places souther outer banks.

Go North on 12 till pavement ends and you wil have miles of deep sand. We are headed there Friday night, going to stay 4 nights then go down to Ocracoke and from there toward Morehead City

Just got back tonight from week long trip on Outer Banks - Everything was all good until I got to Ocracoke Island. Got cocky and never aired down the entire trip and four wheeled on every legal section of beach from Corova to Oregon inlet and no problems. We took ferry to Ocracoke and went to the beach, sand seemed different but all was good. Backed down toward water it was a bit of an incline had a couple of brews and decided to drive the rest of the beach. Jeep obviously was already in 4wd (high). I put it in gear gave a little gas and felt jeep sink, I locked in front and rear lockers after putting in low and gassed it.

BAD< BAD < DECISION!!!! Jeep sunk to the frame and to top things off when I gassed it the rear tires threw an enormous amount of sand into the jeep. Everything from my dash, console seats carpet was covered. Took over an hour to dig out with a shovel after lowering the air to 20lbs in each tire.

I took to the car wash today when we got back to the mainland and they ran it threw twice using the undercarriage spray.
Tomorrow I will pressure wash the entire under carriage

If you're interested in some hard-core beach & sand wheeling, check out Long Island around Cape Lookout. You have to take a private ferry to get there from:

Morris Marina
‎1000 Morris Marina Road
Atlantic, NC 28511
(252) 225-0548

They drop you off at a NPS campground that has cabins for rent (for those bringing their lady friends), plus camping for free on the beach. Things to do on the island:

- 4 wheel in the sand on the beach and interior of the island.
- Drive the tide line during low tide (at 50 mph if you want). Jeeps are allowed *anywhere* on the Island (all 25 miles of it). Occasionally parts of the beach may be closed for Bird Nesting/Turtle Hatching season - but easy enough to bypass those areas.
- Wait till low tide, then jump across the inlet on the North end of Long Island to Portsmouth Island. NPS has a restored village from the 1940's, and is a great place for a picnic with the ladies.
- Some of the best Surf Fishing in the Outer Banks.
- Buy all the Ice + free advice you could want from the Ranger station (+ Air and Gas).

A total get-away from the world. Very wild seashore. The primitive cabins & electrical lights are the most civilization you'll see (and the lights run off a generator). Pretty easy to get a Cabin reservation during the heat of Summer. In the fall during the King Mackerel run, well, forget it.

Anyway its a good multi-day excursion. I try to do it once a summer, and have a blast.

Regards;
