Wierd jerry can

Hey guys i recently picked up a good looking jerry can from a garage sale, it is almost brand new, it is metal with a metal spout nothing unusual about untill i opened it. I found a metal cylinder with little pin holes seems to fit in the spout or on the rim of the can. you can unscrew the top of it and its filled with little crystals almost like rock salt. ???? anyone know what this is? my guess is that it could be crystal iodine for water filtration or maybe even some sort of gas filter or saver? :surrender: I searched the web for a couple hours with no luck. Hopefully i can post a picture or video of it soon.

Interesting.....any markings on the can, like country of origin or manufacture ?
Are you sure it's not a WATER CAN ?

Hopefully the pictures turned out good. but the side of the can says VIN SM 55 and the bottom says ASCAII55. I don't know a lot about jerry cans this is my first one so i have no idea if its a water can. it could easily be military because from the looks of the estate sale this man was either an extreme gear head or was retired from the military.

Thanks that is the same can but my main concern is the metal cylinder filled with crystals that fits on the rim of the can.

I bet that is a Moisture Desicant (sp?) used to absorb moisture during long term storage.
Not sure, but thats my guess....
The Origin of the can looks to be German or some european country just from the looks of it.
There has been a change in "RULES" about Gas and Fuel cans in the past few years. Some of these Military type gas cans no longer pass federal rules for transportation of flamables....Not sure what the deal is, but I know some imported cans were recalled .
Found that out while looking for a set of cans for the Jeep....
I found some nice Made in USA cans so I quit looking at the Surplus Military ones.

yea that's what i was starting to think especially since when i put a few in a glass of water they wouldn't dissolve or anything. if it's for water it would dissolve i would think. so it must be a water absorbent. And thanks for the heads up on the rule change/ recall. Also if you don't mind sharing where did you get the USA made cans?

I googled "Jeep Cans" and Gas Cans... I got all kinds of info....
What I ended up with is this Company, the stuff looks good. I haven't made a purchase YET, but I did find em locally at "Coastal Farm and Ranch"....
What is scary is the danged old Jeep Can Brackets I used to have and threw away because I never thought I'd use em and they were rusted up and bent !! Those things are going for $75.00 Each now days and they are Cheap Chinese repops....!

Thanks!!! and yea i definitely know what you mean about the bracket. I'm working on designing and fabricating my own out of either aircraft aluminum or steel. But I have to do some more calculations as far as how much i want it to cost me in extra weight added to the jeep.

I was looking at my Bookmarks tonight and I found these Jeep Can holders, look like repops but they only want $25.00 each....
Might be an option...

Blitz Metal Cans

I'll keep looking.....more time than $$$$....
The old style "Bumperette's" would be kinda cool if ya had a real bumper (steel)... problem is ,then the cans are in the way of the tail lights.... "BH"
