Subwoofer/stereo install, ign, battery terms
2005 TJ Sport, 6-speed.
Stereo install: Installed a Sony single DIN head unit that I took out of my wife's old car. Bought the install kit from Crutchfield. Two hangups - 1. removing the factory stereo with that anti-theft bar in the rear (Crutchfield instructions didn't include that; several writeups here do) and 2. I pulled too hard on the antenna wire removing the old unit and didn't notice there's a second junction behind the glove box (it had just pulled apart; easy fix once I noticed it).
Sub install: Bought the Quadratec unit (dealer was paying). Ridiculously easy install, and based on having used the Crutchfield wiring harness, no additional wiring was needed.
Ignition (NEED ADVICE!): It's been 'sticky' once in a while - feels like it's gummed up. Sprayed some electronics cleaner in it and it was vastly improved. I can still take the key out in most positions most of the time. That can't be right! I had installed a 20A fuse to disable the clutch cutout switch, but now that isn't working anymore (may be blown fuse; haven't had time to check). Please see also Battery Terminals, below.
Battery Terminals (ADVICE?): After finishing the sub install last night, everything electric was acting goofy. Starter acting like it wasn't getting any juice. Interior lights not working AT ALL, but battery was reading 12.5V at the terminals (<12V at the dash gauge). Most strange was that the guages would bounce all over the place like they were posessed for a minute or so AFTER removing the key! I know weak batteries can cause some strange stuff...but geez! Put the jump box on it and the interior lights would work and things were a bit less strange (strong clicking from starter, interior lights working).
SOLUTION (I hope): Cleaned the battery terminals with a file. Re-installed. Started Jeep. All is well. Tonight before taking it out for some (very) light wheeling, the ignition switch still felt a little strange. This is also when I noticed the need for pressing the clutch to engage the starter despite the fuse being in place to disable that 'feature'.
I think my problem was two-fold: ignition switch beginning to fail and battery terminals with corrosion. Thoughts?
I would replace the ignition switch first before the battery. I'm guessing due to a bad switch, there are still some residual 12v contact when key is suppose to be in the off position which might be causing the possessed guages.
